Will Yao Ming be as good as Pau Gasol?

Actually, I'm almost positive that Ming will block more shots than Gasol. But Gasol is more of a reflex-shotblocker, you know what I mean?

But undoubtedly, Griffin is the best shotblocker. Probably one of the best in the league.

I heard Pau put on some more weight this summer. He has pretty long arms as well. Ming on the other hand is up there with Willis. I mean Wallace averaged more than 3 blocks a game and he's barely 6'7"!

Ming will be a better defender than Gasol. Gasol does have a better post game than Ming and has shown that he is able to withstand contact well. However once Ming improves his strength stamina, and improves his low post skills,he will be very difficult to stop because he will then realize how much he can hurt his opponents.

Wallace is a LOT bigger than 6'7. He's more like 6'9 but his arms are very long. Thats why he blocks so many shots.

He blocks so many shots because of his tenacious attitude and athleticism. Attributes I haven't seen in Ming (yet), in my very limited exposure to him.

I think I've seen something like this before. It was with the Rockets team picture. I think the question was about Eddie being 6'11. He looked shorter than Mo Taylore, who was 6'9. We found out he was slouching, and that there were other optical illusions.

Well no one knows for sure these days. Remember Barkley's listed height? :)

Note the "other optical illusions" part. There could be anything wrong. Maybe he's a little bit behind Brand, which would make him appear smaller. I don't know much about this, but I wouldn't base a players height on one team picture.

I also checked NBA.com and ESPN.com. Both have Wallace at 6'9. Brand was about either 6'8 or 6'9. So they probably aren't far off anyway. Just a slight slouch or anything wrong, and one may appear larger.

edit: Hmm...now you edited your post and it looks like I made up your quote.

Maybe Brand was wearing high heel snickers, or Wallace wearing "low" heel ones, or both? :D

It's not out of the question but hard to believe Ben is really just 6'7". Is the poor fellow too slow to play power forward? being 4-5 inches shorter than normal Cs and stil won defensive player of the year? If Ben is 6'7" then Barkley could be a hell of defender giving up the same 5 inches. :D

He will be better this year. His statistics may not match up, but the impact he has on the Rockets will be far greater than the impact Pau had on the Grizzlies. I guarantee it.

I will guarantee one thing : the impact of Yao on the Rockets will be very hard to measure.

If Francis gets rid of his headaches and improves a bit with his decision making (both very possible) and Griffin improves (almost granted), the Rockets will have a much better record after next season, no matter what Ming does.

So how do you measure Yao's exact contribution to team success unless his stats are either real bad or very good?

I think his impact will be felt because we finally have a REAL inside presence. Cato can only dunk, Eddie's a bit too young at the moment, MO is more of a shooter, Kenny is a little too short, adn nevermind about Collier. With a low post presence, the defense has to be honest on driving, and when Ming has the ball, will probably have to double him. Therefor, an open shot is made.

And I didn't even mention his defense...:)

I would start with points allowed and fg% against when measuring Yao's contributions. Forget his individual stats.

Don't be silly, ZRB. Not even Timing would want that. The board would be the poorer for that lost bet.

Incidentally, I think you're right about Yao.

The scary thing is the sky is the limit and it only seems incidental to compare Ming to another...It's like tomatoes and pineapples...The comparison is lacking...

Nah I wouldn't want that but it's funny to see ZRB squirming out of his statements like he did last season. Honestly I can't wait until the season to see one of ZRB's trademark "That was pathetic" threads bashing on Yao for having more fouls than rebounds at the half and then seeing half a million Chinese fans proceeding to pile on ZRB. :D :D

IMO, I really can't see Ming ever getting more fouls than rebounds, points or even assists. Once Rudy takes him aside and says, "Grasshopper, don't hop -- don't move -- even if hungry Shaqmantis turns on you! Become the heron and get the fowl."

Seriously, Ming is a disciplined basketball student. Rudy and crew will teach him when and how to take a charge. He is such a good free throw shooter that other teams will learn to back off.

Man, I just can't WAIT for the season to start!!!

Give me some credit. I usually bash the entire Rockets team, rather than an individual player.

Besides, I don't think you'll be seeing a lot of "That was Pathetic" threads from me this year. The Rockets are going to be a good team this year. If they get anything less than the sixth seed, I'll stop posting...

    ...for a day...

Ming has the potential to becoming the best Center. Sure Gasol is good and all, but Ming has got potential to blow every other center out of the water. Sure, Shaq is a force, but he doesn't have the grace of the other elite centers like Hakeem, Wilt, Jabar, etc.

At 7'6" Ming looks to have the touch, grace, footwork, and passing ability to have him paced to becoming the first Chineese basketball hall of famer.

I agree 100% with you, Yao could and probably will be great!
