Because when he drops 25/10, fans' expectation will increase to
    30/15. ;)

The hype was established a bit high when Yao came into the league. Being skilled, 7'6", and from China brings too much hype with it from the start.

exactly - ESPN was tearing him up at halftime of the Lakers game, but they all gave him mucho props for his second half effort.

... if those Yahoos there can give credit where it is due, I wonder why houston "fans" can't

The title should be: Will Yao ever Measure Up to the Hype under JVG or in Houston???

Just think how good Ewing could have been if he had been playing for a better coach.

Yao will never live up to the hype.

Why? Because his hype includes his marketing potential, ability to draw a crowd, and, quite simply, his enormity.

It's a hype generated off way way way more than just a scouting report.

I never said anything bad about Ewing. Just like Ewing, I don't think Yao will ever be dominate or MVP worthy.

    I meant to say

Yao will never been dominate or MVP worthy under Jeff Van Gundy.

I think Yao will be able to fully reach his potential in another 2-3 years with a good coach. But I don't think that's going to happen under JVG. So unless the Rockets are a serious contender next year, I just don't see Yao stay here as a Rockets as long as JVG is the coach.

it certainly doesn't look good now. i'm still hold out a little hope that Yao'll become a great player one day just because I'm a big fan of his. but realistically i agree to the Rik Smits comparison that has been drawn by a lot of people. I'm aware that Yao has better stats than Smits at the same stage of their careers. and I believe Yao will max out at 20/10 for a couple seasons in his career, that will put him above Rik Smits after all is said and done. but stats aside, Yao's no different than Smits in terms of the impact on the game, a great role player.

As long as he helps the Rockets win a championship, who cares?

no... Stats are why people are calling him Smits. ... Smits NEVER got a double team - he just took jumpers. The reason Yao only gets 20/10 is that he is triple teamed or FOULED every time he touches the ball. If the shooters on this squad are hitting their shots and the PFs actually rebound - Yao is unstoppable

... I counted 3 real, blantant - uncalled - fouls on Yao tonight (nevermid all the ticky tacks he gets each time down the floor)

Because winning the championship is predicated upon him living up to the hype.

If he doesn't live up to the hype, no way we will win the championship.

Yao's impact is much greater than Smits. Smits scored on jumpers
and seldom drew double team. Yao now scores more inside and
constantly draws double-team and fouls (7.1 FTs in 31 mins).
Smits was also a 3rd or 4th option on a loaded pacers. Yao
will always be the 2nd star of this team and possibly the best
player if he "measures up to the hype".
