ok...but we all knew it would take a QB time. they gave him one series. one of the arguments against taking young was that we didn't want to wait all that time for him to develop. "So instead, we'll draft a guy who can make an immediate impact!!!" DE's usually don't need the time to develop that a QB does. There is an entirely different expectation.
Having 15 tackles and 5 sacks isn't what it is all about right now. I think most of us aren't talking about numbers. We are talking, just from watching him in one game that he is slow, doesn't have any explosiveness and doesn't look very promising from a physical/athletic standpoint. How in the world can you get a sack or make a tackle if you can't move well?
Wadsworth's play has been pedestrian at best, no burst, no push , no moves; it's like Travis Johnson all over again except this time we managed to get him with the first overall pick. Texans were afraid of a long hold out with Bush and that is only reason Wadsworth is a Texan.
Not to mention the fact that they started taking him out on 3rd down plays in the 2nd half. And it wasn't just the pass rush that was bad. Philly simply ran right through them. To me, that was the most disappointing thing about Mario - that if he couldn't get to McNabb, he could at least lay some hits on Westbrook. Instead he was a non-factor (again) and was completely outplayed by DeMeco Ryans. My nickname for Mario has become "Invisible". He's simply nowhere to be found on too many plays. Can you imagine how inept this organization will look if DeMeco were to go on and win Defensive Rookie of the year over the no. 1 pick in the draft? I see this snowballing all over Mario this year and it'll be all Kubiak's fault for putting him into a no-win situation. No matter what he does during the rest of the season, unless he has a breakout year and wins defensive Rookie of the Year honors, his being picked no. 1 will be considered a dumb, stupid mistake. As for the Bush-Williams comparisons: Expect this to continue all year especially if the Texans continue to be unable run the ball and put points on the board. The national media will be short-stroking this story all year.
I saw him double teamed numerous times. It wasn't on more than maybe a third of the snaps, but they did double him during the game. In a way, I was surprised, considering how poor he was at freeing himself off of the blocks. He's huge, but that's not going to be enough. How so? I personally blame Casserly for not managing a trade for the pick (what they really needed to do, even if the return wasn't astonishing - no need to commit so much cap to a guy unless he thrills you like Bush thrilled a lot of other teams) Evan
i know. it was just a bit of a jab. i'm just as disappointed in Williams' play as anybody. i wanted Bush but as the offseason went on, i could see why Williams was picked. for now, it's not looking good. i expect him to show something the next couple of games. if not, we're in for a LOOOOOOONNNNGGGGG season.
THAT HAPPENED!! I saw Donovan pull out a beer. . .well . .it was a Zima and just guzzle it . . . He offer Williams a sip but then said he was too young The rifled a pass to Donte' He was a good guy. . he took the bottle to the side line to be recycled. Rocket River
It better not take him that long...He's the #1 pick, so he needs to play like it...He will get double teamed, so the others need to step it up...
No, he really isn't. Not now. Runyan was abusing him, but it was an 8 year vet (I think) playing against a rookie in his first NFL game and it showed. But again, he has a lot to learn. I don't think he's even close to being as good as he will be. He's not a finished product by a long shot.
You nailed that one. I actually feel sorry for the kid. And God help us if Bush goes wild, VY excels, and Rudy Gay turns into an NBS superstar. Houston sports will become like a media "r****ded zone." Williams looked anything but dominating in his first real game. The thing that surprised me is that he looked slow.
I was completely stunned at his utter lack of speed. He was completely undressed on that reverse. Bush is going to be a star and you can't convince me that the Texans' "offense" couldn't use someone with his talent. By the end of the season, everyone in Houston will be totally beaten down from all of the Bush-Williams talk by the national media.
Just like Jason Hirsh's, Mario Williams game will appreciate with time. They are both natural slow starters. They will be fine in my estimation. Williams will (hunch and faith) be a solid lineman for us for at least a decade. We are building for a couple of year anyways - to be real contenders. Time is our friend this case. P.S. Why are people mentioning Bush in this thread? He had an okay game - it was not "good", just okay. I hate that total yards nonsense. Dominick used to rack up great "total yards" but it did not impress me much because it skews discourse (it is a sexy way of disguising the true story). Oh well that rant (in full) is for another day.
New Orleans 1 - 0 Houston 0 - 1 If the Texans didn't want Bush they should have traded the pick. One has to face the fact that no matter how you spin the Mario Williams pick, the Texans orgazination still looks like a bunch of morons. And to all you VY lovers out there, Cutler is way better.
the saints are made up of more than reggie bush. they were a better team than the texans last year and they have more talent than the texans do this year. cutler is on the denver broncos. he has as much talent around him as anybody in football. football isn't an individual sport.
a) they were a win better; but when you're talking about 2 teams that combined to win 5 games... i mean, really.; b) but isn't bush part of the "more talent"? if not, i'm at a lost how you arrived at that conclusion. they signed a QB with a questionable arm, traded their second-best receiver last year, lost their all-pro center... i don't think they have as much talent as the texans.
i'll take back everything i said and just say this. football is a team sport. the saints didn't win merely because they drafted reggie bush. the texans didn't lose merely because they drafted mario williams.
And if the Texans keep making stupid personel decisions then the rest of the NFL will always have more talent then the Texans.
