I dont think we should speculate and make it sound like fact.

I have been curious what kind of contract they planned on giving Yao?

The Max? alot of posters have stated he doesnt deserve the max and maybe rightly so? But we all understand due to the market Yao will get the Max somewhere if not here.

that makes me curious if the Rox did not offer Yao the max what would happen? something close but not the max.

    1. accept it
    2. demand a trade (which I doubt)
    3. leave as a FA

would the Rox be that dumb? but it would make for an interesting discussion. Personally I think Yao would be devastated and leave as an UFA.

you're asian too, aren't you? i know how you feel and what you're talking about traveling wise, it just seems a lot easier to live in cali if you're traveling to asia ......but it's not worth it moving over there just for that, and someone like Yao prolly doesn't care too much about the extra ticket you have to play if you live in texas

    Mark my words...

I have a buddy in Yao's posse. Yao is pissed about the whole Swift deal. Yao has been playing nice for the cameras but he is pissed.

He said "If Stro comes to the Rockets I'm outta here..."

based on how the rockets handled francis and tmac, they will offer a max extension.

based on everything yao has said over the years, he will sign it.

    a) at 18/8/2, yao is probably not worth quite a max contract. however, he is 24 and poised to be the best center in the league for some time to come. if Big Z can get $11M/yr, then yao deserves the max.

    b) as far as offering yao something close to the max, it would be highly insulting to offer someone you have heavily marketed, praised, and made a cornerstone of your franchise, close to the max but not quite. it's like you're trying to squeeze them, and you don't want to look that way. at that point, you just offer the max anyway.

    c) everything i just said is moot. even if yao isn't quite worth a max contract for his on the court play, his off the court value makes him worth every penny and you can bet Les and Team Yao know this. so even discussing the possibility we offer less than the max is silly.

The Rockets will sign Yao to a max contract before the summer is over.

Rockets should do a sign and trade now while he still has value. When we pick up Kemp Yao's services will no longer be needed.

Paraphrase of Stack24 and m_cable: We can max out Yao regardless of our cap situation because we have his Bird rights.

Thanks guys. I've made several attempts to read the CBA or Larry Coon's FAQ over the years, but my eyes glazed over every time. :D

But something is still bothering me. Suppose we maxed out Yao this summer, signing him to a multi-year contract. Since we were already over the cap, we used the Bird exception on Yao. Fine so far.

Now suppose we didn't have all those expiring contracts next summer but had to continue carrying Spoon, Moochie, etc. on the books. Would Yao's salary for 06/07 push us way over the cap, or would Larry Bird's magic dust continue to make Yao invisible cap-wise?

I cannot imagine Yao leaving Houston, so i do think he will get a max contract soon. Besides don't his parents have a restaurant here...they must have thought that Yao was going to play here for the rest of his career to have built one.
