White will get an opportunity to showcase himself in the following season ala Wafer. It will be hard for him to make the team if Wafer is re-signed but he does have an outside chance.
Can anyone answer this question. When a team takes a flyer on a journeyman player like Wafer, why wouldn't they put a club option in his contract in case he succeeds? I don't get it. The Rockets discovered or developed him but didn't sign him to a contract that gives them the option to keep him.
You answered your own question yourself. Just like you said. Journeyman. Why would a club offer someone a club option when he has been on different teams year after year. Basically being cut.
Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that Von would be a key free agent for the Rox this year?
exactly, Morey should have re-signed a new contract with him before he got the rights to become free in the upcoming summer.
Von Wafer is the bomb. I don't see why people think james white can replace him when we never seen james white play. Just because a player has athleticism does not mean he has the drive to play. Well maybe he does since morey signed him, but von deserves his minutes
The Rockets need Super Von or a player similar to him - shooting guard with explosiveness to drive to the basket and shoot high percentage from 3pt land. More reasons to keep him: (1) T-Mac, if he comes back, won't be till mid-season (2) Down economy means we could get Von on the cheap, also the cap is gonna go down (3) MLE is too much for Von considering his limited experience and defensive liabilities (4) Adelman gave him his shot when many others didn't, that's gotta count for something Though, if Morey is somehow able to get rid of T-Mac and Brooks for an All-star SG (Jefferson, Martin, Gordon, Butler, Carter, Miller) then we won't need Super Von
I recall Rockets were hesitant to pay James Posey 6 mil per year---different type of player - but he has been a solid NBA player for Miami (ring one) and Boston (ring two) and now new orleans----I compare a lost opportunity.... Von Wafer is not as physical a defender as Posey - but he is extremely quick and creates his own opportunity - very valuable for this team.......I do not think we can re-sign him for 3 mil per year. Morey is a very good GM - I hope he can work this out under the lux tax to re-sign him for the MLE
Rockets will be around $5.8M under the League's LT estimate of $69.4M If the Rockets re-sign Artest and use their entire MLE be it on Wafer or other free agents. There's only two possible scenarios for the Rockets to stay under LT after spending that much: 1)Trade T-Mac to a team $23M under the salary cap in an one-way trade (Possibly Detroit?). 2)Trade T-Mac to the Pacers for a package including Marquis Daniels's contract. His contract isn't guaranteed. A team option with a June 30 deadline makes it an instant $7.4M expiring contract.
hes more important to resign than artest is just because he is 23 and u never know what can materialize with these young players he hasnt even played his best basketball while artest has and this is the best artest is going to play for the remainder of his career but if von plays well in the playoffs and houston ADVANCES then yes houston will loose him
I dont think so. You see how Artest plays and his attitude first before rewarding him. We give him what he wants and there is no telling how his attitude would be. Its always easy to play the nice guy when you have to work for something.
Did you forget that half the people here thought Dorsey was going to come in and replace Deke, Chuck and Carl Landry? What made it even funnier was that they based this on some trashing talking Joey Dorsey did when he was drafted and the fact that he dunked a lot in youtube videos. Of course, James White will come in and replace not only Von but also Ron, Shane, Lowry and Brooks because dunking from the free throw line translates into being a superb NBA player.
Mike Harris, Loren Woods, James White all got team options. The Rockets probably offered one to Wafer as well but Wafer has to agree to it. I'd guess Wafer wanted an one year offer with the hope of getting more money next season either here or elsewhere. It's like back with Landry's rookie deal. He didn't accept the Rockets multiple year offer that was non-guaranteed.
If Von performs in the playoffs like he is in the regular season there will be teams lining up to sign him. He is a special offensive player, who is getting it on D too, as his confidence grows he is playing more and more under control. You do not find players as skilled and aggressive with his ELITE athleticism very often. Von has all - star ability......hopefully he stays..... Last night against New Orleans he comes in and the team is losing by 6, by the time he leaves in the 2nd quarter, the Rockets lead by 8, and he has 9 points.... The guy creates so much havoc with his offensive aggression and he is SOOOOO efficient...45% FG and 40% 3pt percentage....... I am really close to saying....by to Ron and starting Von...next year... DD
What about Battier and Chuck Hayes for Gay and Darko? Resign Von for 3m per and let Artest walk. Sign Barnes as a backup swing, problem solved!
I think Ron's D is overated, and Battier is actually a better one on one and team defender. But what Ron brings is toughness and a physical presence which is hard to quantify in stats, he beats people up so much that they eventually quit.....well, people not named Kobe.... The problem I have with Ron is his lack of understanding or accepting of who he is on offense, he is an inefficient player who should play more to his strengths and realize that he is not quick enough to go one on one, and his post game is predicated on whom is guarding him......it is a matchup post game, if he has an equally strong person, he SUCKS in the post. Ron's issue is all in his head....if he played the team game more often I would be ecstatic to sign him long term, but he plays too much one on five and it costs the team....a lot. Whereas Von Wafer plays the team game a lot more, and you can see him growing before your eyes....Ron plays nearly 2 times the minutes of Von.....if you extrapolate out and extended Von's minutes...he would be scoring more than Ron and at a greater efficiency. I am still on the fence about Ron and worry about him in the post season trying to impose his will, when he is not all that good at doing that. Von is also an elite athlete in a league of quality athletes, he is top 1% of all NBA athletes.....with his combination of quickness and leaping ability, and has shown significant strides in BBall IQ....steals from behind, passes on drives....I like what I see and he is only 23 years old....he is going to be REAL good. Not just kind of good, but REAL good. DD
