don't think there is anything in the bible about depicting a prophet in a picture/painting

if it is deep in there, than it's not something that is practiced by any christian i know. therefore very different.

yes, it is two religions (with equally important figures in muhammad and jesus), but you're not supposed to depict a saint or prophet so that people won't idolize those figures instead of the message he spoke.

that is why they make such a big deal when he is depicted, but in the west religion isn't worth a riot, and the west being mostly christian isn't going to be as offended by this as a muslim in the east would be about a cartoon depicting the prophet muhammad.

we live in two different worlds, extremist views dominate regions where the government is weak, not here.

can a muslim poster speak to whether or not this view (of not depicting a saint/prophet) is still largely in practice? or is it just a technicality that you ignore in this time (not including eastern muslims).

o, but i am sure the author will get some threats. it takes nothing to call or write someone and threaten them. to actually commit an act of violence on a person or to riot would be, as my brotha eugene would say, a "whole notha' leva"

Put these people in the same circumstances that exist in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Yemen....and you'll get the same crap happening. If you are willing to threaten to kill someone over religion, you ain't all that far away from putting it into action. Human nature stays the same, only the circumstances change. You might think that humans have evolved into more civilized people, they haven't, take away the food and opportunity and you get that same animal.

people threaten to kill people over a mechanic's quote. that doesn't mean they're going to act on it. like i said before, the west and east are different animals, in the us (where more christians reside compared to the mid east) no one is going to riot over a controversial cartoon.

in the mid east, if this was depicting muhammad, they would be much more upset. not only because of their beliefs, but because the governments are weak and can not control the radical sectors of religion.

i guarentee you this person is getting a lot of death threats from crazy christians, they just won't act on them because here in america we just dont give a sht.

Drawing and depicting religious figures or anything with a face is something we believe shouldn't be done, because it causes people to stray away from the persons message and almost makes them like an idol and then down the generations you have ppl just worshiping an image or statue. Thats what Islam trys to prevent. We believe in Jesus and its not like we want cartoons drawn of him, especially that if they are offensive because he too is very important in our reglion. So to answer your question yes, we still practice not depicting people but it goes beyond that to just about any living thing or face. Depending on how devout you are you can see what your comfortable with but when it comes to religious figures its a big no no

I largely agree with your post, but not the bolded part as much.

In many Muslim countries, depicting faces - particularly in political satire - is common. Though I find cartoons of Jesus and Muhammad offensive the same way I find Carlos Mencia offensive towards Latinos, it doesn't bother me so much that I react the way extremists have around the globe.

It's somewhat annoying seeing certain Muslims ignore humorous/offensive images of Jesus, Abraham, Adam, Moses, Noah et al., but go completely berserk when it's Muhammad.

Muhammad faced magnitudes more pain and offense to his face when he was alive, yet he didn't react the way some people did to the Danish cartoons. Many times he even forgave the person hurting him. I can't see how one silly image published nearly 14 centuries after his death can disturb him or the creator of the universe so much that it justified the cartoon riots.

Then again no one practices their religion or rules to a T. But that's why you can't hide a group by its people. Judge on the rules and regulations.

I understand the original idea behind this, but don't you see that these rules are from ancient times and would not be the same today? If you think it through and would really want to be consistent with this "rule", there shouldn't be TV, Internet, anything. Well, I guess there are some people associated with the religion who think that.

yes, i knew that it was in the qur'an, i just didn't know if it was one of those things that is actually followed by MOST muslims. i was an MES and Gov major, so i took a lot of classes on islam, but never had a class that discussed the practical every day muslims.

like christians and p*rn, im a christian (raised catholic, but i dont think the sect of your religion is important/another story) ive looked at p*rn, and thought of unscenely acts with just about every attractive female i've ever seen, even if it was just for a split second like "ohhh the things i would do to her" i wouldn't consider myself a nonchristian for thinking this way because in todays day and age lust doesn't hold as much weight as far as "sin strength" in the eyes of most christians.

maybe that is a poor example, do you get what i am saying?

Ya I got ya. I think because many people have weak minds it could have caused problems to re create important figures until they became something they weren't. Kind of makes me think about all those statues of Zeus and all that mythology. I felt as it must have been concocted from real people and then they somehow became larger than life.
