I'll wait to see what it gets on rottentomatoes before I decide if this is something I'll watch on the big screen, PC or rent..
You know what the real issue is here....deep down we all just feel old and blasting this movie is our way of dealing with it. That being said, I thought the trailer wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. I'll bet a 5 spot that it won't be a flop.
i think this is a good role for jackie chan. he's a little too old to be playing leads in action films now. i don't think he can afford to break any more bones at his age.
So this is karate kid for the bruthas? Well where the heck is our Mexican version of Bruce LeeJuan or better yet, lets remake star wars and introduce Obi-Juan.
I have the American Psycho (Mexican version) for you right here. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xP4voV8bE8o&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xP4voV8bE8o&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Somehow Miyagi taking out a bunch of adolescents doesnt have the same ring to it as him taking out a bunch of high school upper classmen. The kids are all a bit too young for the fight scenes to have any weight to them.
do you not remember the china olympics... gymnastics... but i don't understand why you're all bashing this movie, doesn't look too bad, remakes will happen, not saying it should, but you know this was coming someday, and that someday is now will watch
Honestly, the only part of the trailer that made me smile was watching an adult beat on kids. Something about it just screams awesome to me. I guess me not liking kids is why.

Not sure what the problem with this is. The original was also about a kid entering a new socio-racial environment as a persecuted minority. If anything, people will be able to identify a little more readily with prejudice against a black kid than prejudice against an Italian.

It looks ok....I'm not gonna see it in the theater though...I'll give it a shot on Netflix....I don't have too much of a problem with remakes, some movies lend themselves quite well to that treatment...others not so much. I think I would be a lot more fine with this movie if they didn't call id the Karate Kid and if it didn't seem to slavishly follow the original. I do like the fly swatting part at the end. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think the original had anything to with race either...I think it was more about socio-economical divides than racial ones.
The problem I see with this movie is Will Smith is going to try to make his kid look cool, which is a big problem. In the original Karate Kid Daniel was a dork/loser that kept getting his ass kicked by the super cool Cobra Kai. I mean was there anything funnier then watching Daniel get punked trying to fight on the beach, getting run off a road down the hill, or getting trash talked during the tourny? The Cobra Kai is what made the original such an amazing movie, not Daniel. This is why the remake will suck.
Heh, I have 4 kids. The "old man beats up a buncha young guns angle" made that particular scene work so well. "Where's Spiderman?" Yes, an amazing set of stereotypical high strung teenage villains that was actually pulled off very well. Kreese was amazing as the anti-miyagi char. Anyone seen that "all I need to know I learned in the 80's from Yoda and Miyagi" list? That's part of what makes the film such a classic. There are some films that just dont need to be remade. King Kong was done as a special effects update. Same for the upcoming Clash of the Titans. I dont see the original Terminator being remade. Nor Alien or Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
This movie is made for: 1) kids 2) black people 3) Chinese people 4) Jackie Chan fans It looks totally different from the original so why even bother comparing. P.S. Complaining about stuff made in the 80s make you look very old.
There's something about his kid I don't like (as an actor). He always has the same look on his face and doesn't seem like that good of an actor to me. I bet there are many others out there that could play the part(s) better, but having Will Smith as your dad helps tremendously.
