Morey looks really stupid right now... for all the analytics talk you build a team that can't even make free throws. Wow.
Kevin disagrees <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>"Josh (Smith) made some, missed some. I'll live w/ Josh up there shooting," - McHale on Smith's FT shooting (12-26 FT)</p>— Adam Wexler (@awexler) <a href="https://twitter.com/awexler/status/586724688912523265">April 11, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
I honestly see no reason we won't just be hacked right out of the first round, no matter who our opponent is.
I did a quick look at the last 10 champions and the Miami Heat in 2006 were the worse FT shooting champion at 71.8%.
The only thing more embarrassing than another first round loss would be losing because none of our big men can make free throws. If we go out like this, Morey is gonna have to clean house this summer. You can't build a team around a philosophy of 3-pointers and free throws and load up the roster with guys who shoot below 40%(and in a lot of cases below 35%) from downtown and not even 50% from the foul line.
EDIT I did a quick look at the last 10 champions and the Miami Heat in 2006 were the worse FT shooting champion at 70.0%. We shoot 71.8%
What is he suppossed to say? Smith sucks...we're cutting him? If you want to look for someone to blame, blame the players for not putting in the work. Or Morey for not finding better/well rounded players if that makes you feel better. Mchale can't make the damn shots for them.
What's mind-boggling is that he employs a system that calls for the exact opposite of what we have in terms of personnel. We rely heavily on 3-pointers and free throws, yet we don't have players who can reliably make them.
Gimmicky offense has been exposed by the Spurs. Sucks that we don't have even the right players in the system.
Well said. Got into tonight with several hardcore Spurs fans about intentional fouling and how it skirts around playing a team straight up, its not real basketball IMO.
What do we shoot if we take out Harden? When we're talking about intentional fouling and how that negatively affects us, it's not the AVERAGE free throw percentage that matters. You're only as good as your weakest few links...
I know this is completely incorrect, but I did a quick look in my head...if the Rox shot *just* a league average percentage from the line they would average an extra 2ish points a game. Someone can please check that out for me. Welcome to the JCDenton world of stats and graphs, but without the stats and graphs.
Last year it was the defense, now it's looking like it'll be free throws. It's a shame that this team consistently has fatal flaws that prevent them from competing at a championship level.
