The Rockets were in win-now mode after the Dwight signing. Between Covington, Daniels, and Canaan, Canaan and Daniels contributed immediately. Covington still needed to be developed and there was no room on the roster. His shot was broken in a lot of our games during the 14 and 15 seasons. I'm not pissed we let him go, but rather confident in our scouts that we can find good talent consistently. We aren't missing anything that could be helped by Covington. Who's minutes would he eat up?
Are you F’n kidding me?! Francisco Garcia was completely washed up at that time. Covington won MVP of the D-League all-star game and was/is a 6-9 athletic 3 & D guy. He’s been solid for years and is killing it right now hence his early extension. In regards to who’s minutes he’d eat up... he would add to our overall depth. Reduce Ariza’s minutes and mileage over the last few years. We wouldn’t have needed to trade for Cory Sewer and waste a first round draft pick or lose Troy Daniels in the process. Having Covington would also have given us trade flexibility. We’re STILL looking for a guy like Covington... Brewer (fail); KJ McDaniels (fail); Troy Williams (Inc.). Covington is currently THIRD in the entire NBA behind Harden and Steph Curry in 3 pointers made. Shooting them at a 46% clip. You don’t think MDA wouldn’t find minutes for that skill set? http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/3-points/sort/threePointFieldGoalsMade
Hindsight is 20/20. Covington was not that good when he was year. It took 3 years of consistent playing in Philly to develop into the player he is now. Let's not pretend that everyone knew he would become what he is today. If that were the case, a lot of teams would have fought to claim him after he was waived. He worked hard and developed his game and no amount of analytics can predict that.
You’re wrong... we made a mistake. There are A LOT of Rocket fans/ clutchfans that posted here like myself at the time that It was a mistake. McFail favored vets like Francisco but he was done. Covington was very promising even at that time. The D-League showcase / all-star game MVP put his skills on display. The Vipers shot 3’s like the 2017 rockets with Covington and Daniels, etc. Sure RC improved/developed - he had great work ethic back then too. He WAS claimed IMMEDIATELY by former rockets executive Sam Hinkie. A guy with first hand knowledge of Covington. Bottom line it was a bad decision then and looks worse now. Along with the James Johnson and Hassan Whiteside blunders.
The problem with Morey’s flipping players has its downsides and this is one of them. We rarely hold on to guys long enough to see them develop or just simply do not have a draft pick to develop. Third stringers are not that important, but look at what the Spurs and Warriors get from young nobodies compared to us. That’s one area among a few others where Morey and coaches need to get better at.
At least the cut of the jerseys are okay with the current ones. The cut of those older ones were horrible. They didn't properly fit any player.
Belinelli should be Morey’s main target. 12 points a game shooting 40% from 3. He’d be a great backup for when Ryno isn’t on.
I agree. However, we can only get Belli if he’s bought out. We don’t have expendable guys to match his salary.
3 years 19 million. RocketsTerps is right, don’t think salaries would match but who knows with the fat magician.
