===Jaybird wrote: "That's opinion at a high degree. Do you have a shot chart with percentages on where he shoots specific percentages? I'm curious as to where you've come up with this fact." === Sorry, what I meant was in comparison to Shaq. As Shaq gets farther away from the rim, the worse he gets, but Yao gets better than Shaq. It was a relationship. Shaq is better close to the rim, but Yao is not bad either. As Yao gets farther from the rim, his game will not suffer like Shaq's would. ===Jaybird wrote: "Once again, a shot < 15 feet is a bonus? Because of what exactly? Yao has a comfortable range on his shot, that doesn't mean much other than extends the range he's a threat from. Why anyone would be happy with their center being able to get a shot inside 15 feet is beyond me." === If Yao gets the ball w/in 5 FEET he's almost assured to score. As long as he has some guards that can give him the entry pass low in the post, he'll be ok (greater % chance of scoring). ====Jaybird wrote: " Sure thing again? I agree Yao has good range out to/past 15 feet, but that by no means assures him any of his shots are going to go in." === I didn't say "sure thing" from 15 feet. I said closer to the rim; like w/in 5 feet. The closer he gets the better the chance it will go in. I don't understand why you don't get that? Now, this is assuming that he's not triple teamed. He'll need to get better at backing down opponents. But this will come in time. ===Jaybird wrote: "I know Yao won't get all the shots in the offense but he should most definitely get more than Cato took normally in the offense. Plus you still haven't addressed the point of conditioning. Yao was not having an easy time getting up and down the court while playing a good number of minutes in the World Games. But he'll be able to keep up in the NBA's 82 game season with longer games as well?" === Conditioning is very important. See, if Yao only plays 6 minutes per quarter then his shooting percentage will be better (it's sort of an aberration). He has such shooting skill and he's so tall that it creates abnormal shooting percentages (65%, 70%, 75%). I mean, if a guy shoots 2-3, then that's 66%. Does that mean that he's good? NO! But, if he only takes 10 shots a game and most of them are uncontested and he's skilled (like Yao), he COULD shoot 7-10 (70%). That's not a lot of time on the court, and that's NOT a lot of shots. But it makes for bloated shooting percentages. Oh, and your comment about Cato. Yes, Yao will shot more than Cato. But since Yao has more skill than Cato (near the rim OR away from the rim), then Yao will offset his *increased shots,* with *better shooting.* See, if Yao shoots more (than Cato), he better be GOOD at shooting to attain the *same* shooting percentages (as Cato). And, I think you already know that Yao is a better scorer than Cato by far. So, Yao will not only attain the same shooting %, but he will crush Catos stats. ====Jaybird wrote: "I don't doubt Yao will be good, but I think some fans on this board are going way overboard on their estimation of what he'll be able to do in his first season or two." ==== Remember, we aren't talking about 29 points per game. We're only taking about shooting percentages. Games like: 6-10, 5-6, 4-4, 8-13...etc. Yao can do that.
Winkfan, I hear ya. It's was kinda a joke. Wink, wink...but what I meant was that if Yao takes only 20 three-pointers the WHOLE year, and hits 10 of them. What is that? All I'm saying is that Yao has such an excellent shooting touch that he could shoot 10-20 from the 3-point line. Hell, I bet there aren't very many players that could beat Yao at HORSE. Think about it. Steve Nash is one of the best shooters in the league; skill wise. Reggie too. There are only a few players with the same type of shooting touch that Yao has... Think of all the show-boaters in the league that COULD NOT hit 10-20 from the 3-point line, in practice, with NO ONE guarding them! A lot of them! I bet if you had Yao line up on the three-point line and gave him 100 open shots he'd hit 90 of them! Rack'em up! I bet only a few players could do that. People, there are only a few players that I've seen that has the same shooting touch that Yao has: Calvin Murphy, Reggie Miller, Dale Ellis, Chris Jackson, Drazen Petrovic, Larry Bird, and Dell Curry... What makes Yao so incredible is that he's a 7'5" CENTER! It's not how many points they score. It's HOW they score. How they shoot. Their FORM. It's almost like their arm has a "memory" that never forgets and it seems like every shot they take will go in... I used to think that, as long as Larry Bird had an open shot (during the game), that it had a 90% chance going in...sure, he did not shot 90%, but it just seemed that way. Some guys just have the "touch."
