You certainly tried to imply it. What was your point of bringing that up in this thread then?

This thread was about Mcgrady and Hakeem not Hakeem and Toronto. :p

Finishing his career in Tornonto has nothing to do with the greatness of Hakeem.

kenny smith never got close to allstar status. the only reason he was ever anything was because he played with Dream. he wasn't **** before he came to the rockets. the flourished from the wide open 3s that dream gave him.

Otis thorpe barely made it one year. that's it.

all solid role players. all of em. dream rode them to glory

Read my previous post about Rockets vs Knicks Finals. Smith was a non factor against Derek Harper. Kenny Smith wet his shorts everytime he had to bring the ball up against Derek Harper. If your memory fails you, get a tape from somewhere and refresh it.

Please get your facts straight. Judging from your posts, you dont seem to have followed basketball way back when Hakeem played.

Sorry, Faos, but McGrady has a lot to prove. Hakeem has proved his greatness again and again. By his second year, he had pushed an All Star center out of his natural position... a center who was MVP of the All Star game. Heck, even Clutch has Sampson listed as a forward/center. I remember Pat Riley scribbling on a blackboard during the '86 WC Finals, "Contain Akeem!!" That was their focus. And that was a great Lakers team, coming off of a championship the year before.

Look, with the media culture of today, if Tracy and Yao, as a team, win a couple of championships, they may very well be annointed the best duo of all time, whether they deserve it or not. Let's give them a chance to do it, and then this discussion will have some meaning.

I don't think he will, he is defintely as talented as Dream. Its just that Dream did everything first. If T-Mac does everything Dream did, Dream still did it first and notihng in sports ever competes with the guys that did it first.

For T-Mac to surprass Dream hes going to have to do more and thats just to much to ask for anybody. He CAN but I dont think he will.

On a side not how great is it that we can have a debate about this?

I just want to say.... I love Hakeem as well as Tracy. However, I dont THINK that Tracy Mcgrady will ever be as great as Hakeem was BUT...

I sure do hope I am wrong.

It's great. great that we don't have to watch the francis and mobley show no mo and can watch real basketball like the glory years. I think we can beat anyone.

I just get a little pissed when people disrespect dream. I really think it's because they never watched him enough, because if they did they would never utter such bull****. The man was one of the greatest players ever. No doubt top five IMO. better than any big man today better than garnettt, duncam, shaq, whoever. better than ewing, robinson, kareem. i never saw wilt play so i can't argue that. Hakeem olajuwan is what jordan was to guards. he was head and shoulders above the rest and there is no doubt. Remember barkley whining on the side of the court when dream carried the rox over the suns two years in a row? Barkley said Dream was the greatest player in the world. Remember when he waxed David robinson? Robinson said, "i honestly felt like i played good D on him." he was humble and i respect David greatly till this day because he took his beating like a man. Shaq proclaimed dream as the best center. I belive even michael jordan made some quotes about hakeem being the best player , but i'm not so sure.

he was that good. How many times did we beat the bulls during the regular season in the early nineties? like 11 out of 12 or something?

People forgot how great hakeem was. that **** pisses me off

Its possible T-Mac will surpass Dream and win four championships with the Rox and shatter every Rox offensive records and become a fearsome defender.

Even if all of that comes to pass Hakeem will always be the greatest Rocket in my heart.

That's why I voted no. When TMac starts making the studs of the league (Wade, James, etc) look like confused little boys in the playoffs on the way to some rings - then lets bring this back up.

    Yes, he still does.

I wish I would have had the poll more along the lines of "What will it take for McGrady to be the greatest Rocket of all-time?". Maybe more people wouldn't have taken it so personally.

I think TMac and Yao, specifically Yao, have a ways to go before they can be compared to Kobe/Shaq. And that's coming from a big Yao fan.

that is all and good....but I do think that you are over-reacting.

I dont read this as Faos disrespecting Dream...he was simply asking if anyone felt that one day Tmac could be considered the best Rocket.

and see what it has done? generated a fair amount of good discussion of the greatness of the Dream...

really....the abusive language really isnt called for in this case...

I appreciate your devotion to the Dream...I fiully agree that Dream is the best ever in my eyes..but lets show a little more class...ok?
    Dream woudl want you to...:D

Olajuwon is and always will be the greatest Rocket of all time.

That being said, I am quickly starting to love watching T Mac. He is an incredible player and has a chance to become one of the best Rockets of all time.

Speaking of great Rockets, when I was at the Miami game, I always gaze upon the banners and retired jerseys in the rafters. Looking at the 5 retired Rockets jerseys, I told my buddy, " Man, I'll put those 5 guys against ANYBODY and we will win." Those guys being:

    PG Calvin Murphy
    SG Rudy T
    SF Clyde Drexler
    PF Moses Malone
    C Hakeem Olajuwon

Malone and Dream would be interchangeable. That group would dominate. Fun to dream.

    Memo to Clutch:

Please make sure this thread gets saved in your archives, no matter what else happens. I would love to revisit this in 10-15 years when I'm in a nursing home pissing in a bed pan.

interesting lexled....tho i'm not sure we could beat an all-time lakers team....kareem at center. shaq at powerforward. magic at point guard. kobe at shooting guard. worthy at the 3? geez. that's a scary team

Not to mention Barkley, Rick Barry and Elvin Hayes, who have had their jerseys retired by other teams. I wish Barkley had won a championship here because I would have loved to seen his jersey in our rafters.
