And thousands are killed just here in America too. It all depends how you define war. Yet there are countless wars and killing that are avoided each moment too.

Until the Rerpublican Party gets hammered at the ballot box, which I look forward to participating in this November, I don't think you can say that there is a strong "anti-war" movement in the States today. There have been no consequences, yet, politically for Bush's misadventure. Oh, he and his party are getting hammered at the polls, but we've seen nothing remotely like the anti-war movement of the 1960's, and early '70's. Sure, the lack of a draft, and the fact that parents haven't seen their kids recieve a draft notice, produces a lack of urgency about taking action.

I'm totally against reviving the draft, but there is no question, in my opinion, that not having one is the main reason behind the relative apathy we've seen. Instead of hundreds of thousands marching in the streets, we're going to see millions marching to the polls to boot this mad administration out of office. Americans are ready to give the other party a chance to see what they can do about Iraq (since the fool in the White House put us there), and the other issues that the GOP expresses little interest in, except for the soundbites Americans have finally figured out as... soundbites, and little else.

I saw some hisorians who were talking about how the US Congress was not given enough credit for ending tre Vietnam War. Apparently there was a bill introduced each term to cut all money effectively immediately for the war. It was steadily gaining strength and it was just a matter of time till it passed. Nixon was well aware of this. Of course, the anti-war movement did help move the politicos.

I think we should have a draft. I say that as a father of a 19 yr old son with no health problems. Let him make a moral decision and hopefully not go.

We should not support a system which encourages unnecessary wars. in which only the poor and lower middle class Americans die; and which , result in killing 20. to 100 times more foreigners, many civilians as modern war does. Not to mention that the unbelievable money wasted on such wars could do such things as rebuild New Orleans, and is of the order of magnitude to provide free aids drugs for the whole world, give free health care for all Americans and or college education to all.

What should be the punishment for those who choose to not go? If it's nothing more than a slap on the wrist, then how would a draft be different from a volunteer army?

We need governments that don't fight wars on a whim. Who don't massage the facts until they bear no relevance to the truth, and then use what's left to mislead the public about the "reasons" for undertaking a war. We don't need governments that base wars on lies, whether it's LBJ and the Gulf of Tonkin, or George W. Bush and his idiocy.

glynch, we don't need a draft. We need an honest foreign policy.
