I do think some are compulsive and, no, I won't make you a list. Also, I don't think they have to be untrue to be compulsive -- just unnecessary. Every coach would like his team to play perfect, flawless basketball, and no team will ever actually achieve that. Van Gundy complains about everything that is less than perfect (or would, if he had the time).

I think your management philosophy applies to all lines of work other than professional sports and the military.

He's a perfectionist and trying to get his message through to the players can be quite fustrating just based on how many time our players don't learn from their mistakes. I think some comments that may have been unneccessary are out of fustration and that he's just an extremely blunt guy. He doesn't care about what people think including his players. A reporter ask him how he feels, he's going to tell you what's on his mind, especially after fustrating losses. Our players have the hardest heads in the first half of the year so you can't fault him for being irritated by the wa we play. Just unprofessional basketball you have to admit.

I bet his attitude gets a lot lighter once our team turns the corner and start to listen to him more. Winning the right way will cure all for JVG..

I have no problems with JVG's style.. he has gotten Cato to br productive and work hard. He has inspired Spoon (whom the NYC fans called garbage) to play his heart out. He forced Yao to stay and play in the post when we almost gave up on him being a legitimate post payer which is definately paying dividends now. He brought back MJackson and has him wowing up with his passing, Cat is making better decisions and some lock down defense. We have one the top defenses (arguably the best) in the league.

we still have turnover problems and inconsistencies but we had those last year too..

but I see this team moving forward and getting better, and im excited to see how this all plays out in the playoffs.

he also influenced SF to play a lesser role and a more controlled ball.

In the sense of fair play, I did notice this recent JVG comment in the Chronicle in regards to the Clippers game and his (will end up bailing on the Rockets just like he did with the Knicks = "Quitter cause I can't manage personalities) surliness .

"We did not respond the way I would have hoped from the start, but I thought Steve (Francis) and Jimmy (Jackson) in our starting group gave us good energy to start. And then I thought Yao found a way to come alive in the second half."

That's like the ultimate 'kudos' from 'home boy'. But, must admit it was as about as up-beat as one could be on such a win over 'such' a team. Thanks coach.

this is what he said about yesterdays game against the clippers.

"Steve's effort is what carried us,'' Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. ``His hustle plays and his extra effort were just terrific.''

    He has complements before.

One of the most recent was after the Dallas game, he said he was proud of them for finding a way to win after all the turn overs. He said "proud" more than once.

JVG isn't making commentary on how a player is doing. If you think his comments are made according to how a player is doing, you're completely mistaken.

That is not to say they're incorrect. He's usually pretty on-target. But everything he says is calculated to have an effect.

Right now, praising Yao doesn't do much. Yao hasn't been taking heat, isn't having to do anything incredibly difficult, and still has problems with swarm defenses and borderline illegal play.

JVG praises people when (1) they're taking an undue beating in the media, and he wishes to show support, (2) when they've responded significantly to a change he wants, or when (3) they do something totally spectacular (for themselves, not in general).

He wants to get something from his praise. He's not just making objective commentary as an analyst would. Nothing wrong with that - he's not a tv personality anymore. I don't like the style, but it makes sense in many ways.

I think it holds more weight when he does show praise because he doesn't say it all the time.

He is more focused on pointeing out where we have failed because tahts the area that needs work. You can bet next time they go out there they will remember what he critised and try to work on it or prove him wrong the next game.

He reminds me of Pat Riley without the hair and rings.
