In all seriousness, this raises a good point with regards to employers asking for data deemed private...IMO, this is totally different from a drug screen as being under the influence is nothing compared to finding out the genetic make-up of your person...This is similar to profiling which is not right...

In Gattaca, society has been broken up into to classes: the upper class, who were genetically created (best sperm was selected to fertilize the best egg), and the lower class, who were born the old-fashioned way. These people were called 'invalids'.

Prejudice against the invalids was easy - they were more succeptable to disease and were genetically inferior to the upper class. They were the janitors.

The upper class got to be astronauts and sports legends and government leaders.

Sorry to keep harping about this, but every time I read a post in this thread, I think about that movie.

    Hehehe...you have a serious hard-on for Gattica Drox! ;)

Thats okay, great movie and fits this thread well, thats why I posted "It's a brave new world". Read Huxley's "Brave New World" and you'll see where Gattica sprung from...hehehe, "sprung"

I've read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (long time ago), which is pretty surprising 'cause I don't read books much. It's a good one.

And, yea, I guess I do have a boner for that flick (which is also surprising 'cause I'm not a big Ethan Hawke or Uma Thurman fan).

Future employers already discriminate based upon race, disability, age, and gender,so why not DNA?

I always thought Gattaca, was the story of how Mr. Gatti's was created.

Now must watch, upon hearing otherwise.

for something that really isn't your fault
or that your have no control over

You say that but. . the reality is. . . the PREMIUM will be higher on those folx
So you pay more. . because of your genetics

    Discrimination?

Why is it okay for an insurance company to charge more/refuse to insure if you have a preexisting condition, but not if you have a genetic predisposition? Aren't we splitting hairs here?

If someone has a 0.001% chance of living to be 25, I don't think the government should give them a scholarship to med school, it is just a poor allocation of limited resources.

We need to embrace knowledge, not run from it. Just as in many aspects of life, there will be genetic haves and have-nots, but how is inheriting good/bad genes from your parents any different than inheriting a good/bad financial situation, or even nationality? Most don't have a problem with not making every person in the world a citizen of the United States, right?

I am unfortunate enough to get the bad eyesight genes and the prone to being overweight genes. TMac got the 6'8" genes. Curry may have gotten the heart will explode if he plays in the NBA gene. We already discriminate for/against some of those, should Curry's case be special because it is not visably apparent?
