I realize Yao and SF3 are buddies now and Yao refers to him as big brother but SF3 didn't want the Rockets to draft Yao. Francis and Cat wanted Jay Williams. They strongly lobbied for it but was over ruled by Les Alexander, Carrol Dawson, and Rudy T who all wanted Yao.
Huh? I know one of the things I remembered that time when we won the lottery is Francis being asked who they should draft and Francis said, "I know we don't need a PG". Then I remember both him and Cat saying on local TV that maybe that Yao guy is the one they should pick since they need a center (Cato was already discovered to be a paycheck collecting oft injured POS). Of course drafting Yao still meant taking a chance that the CBA wouldn't let him come here, so that was weighing on everybody's mind at the time.
I *love* Steve Francis, but you have to earn your way to the rafters. He was entertaining as hell - I loved watching games during his reign waiting for the Cato alleyoop. He's a Rockets icon, but he didn't achieve enough to get his number on the wall. I still remember the entertainment, panache, and fun he brought to Rockets games during a dark time in franchise history. The man has heart and I respect him for that. Just not enough for "eternal" glory.
francis and cat wanted us to trade the pick for LAMAR ODOM. I believe the quote was "man, with lamar running the break and me and cat on the wings? man, it's over." that statement told me a lot. link: forum.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/16148/20020531/mobley_slights_ming_talks_up_odom/
I love Steve and hope he can return to somewhat of the player he was before. But I would say no to retiring his number.
