Bass signed with Dallas for less than 2mil/year, probably half of what Hayes is asking for. That is pretty good value for a guy who can do what Chuck does, if not a bit more (shot blocking and much better range).
Say what? http://www.nba.com/playerfile/brandon_bass/career_stats.html Scrub who averaged single digit minutes for lotto team in 50 games over 2 years while shooting .377 from the field is better tahn Chuck Hayes?
I wonder if I did a search for "He's Chuck but" in these forums how many topics I would find. If there are so many "Chuck buts" why didn't Morey say thanks but no thanks at the end of last season. Sigh. For those who didn't catch it, they have a contract already in Chuck's agents hands, its just a matter of if Hayes will accept. My unsolicited opinion is that he is waiting to find out what other moves Morey is going to make before he signs anything. Especially since he seems to want to stay in Houston. Once you sign its a lot easier to move you in a trade than if you wait and see. It's not like he has to sign now, he has plenty of time to decide. Edit: Forgot to add: Brandon Bass is not Chuck with upside, believe me I saw enough of the kid in the SEC to know he doesn't have the same hustle or heart.
It's really sad how people don't recognize Chuck Hayes' contribution to the team. As durvasa puts it, not liking Chuck Hayes is a character flaw. If Chuck Hayes leaves without a high level replacement, the Rockets will be regretting it big time.
I just ran into Chuck Hayes at Wal-Mart. I said "Chucky, we need to sign you back," and he said, "I'm signing on the dotted line next week". So there you have it. Straight from his mouth. Chuck will re-sign with the Rockets sometime before the end of next week. The Rockets really do want him back after all.
I believe the media has already hinted about his return to the team. I think the numbers are just being worked out right now. I would like for the Rockets to re-sign Chuck. He is the best rebounder on the team, and he is a physical defender.
Rockets of course. I didn't want to glean much else out of him, because of Scola and Landry and high expectation from Novak, coupled with all these rumors about us landing another powerforward. He was buying water. But he said he'll remain a Rocket.
Great to have him back, of course. Then again, maybe this is the last time you see him buying water at Wal-Mart. He'll be a rich man soon, and will shop with the rest of the rich folks at Target from now on.
Uhh..NO. We will not make a trade with Chuck anytime soon. The thread started was dead on Morey will look to make another trade and if it doesn't happen Hayes will be back.
Thanks for posting. Good to hear. Seriously yall... I would hate hate hate to have to follow another team if he left. I like the Rockets too much now. Apparently he doesn't think Morey will shop him as part of a trade once he signs his "life" away. I think that's definitely a good sign. I wonder how that works, if they offer a contract do they have a certain amount of time to sign before it becomes void? Like maybe Chuck has until the end of the month to accept the offer or something?
Maybe a little math class would do you some good because about 5 million dollars of the payroll still does not put us anywhere close to being under the cap.
If I remember correctly, recently signed/re-signed players cannot be traded until December 15th, 2007. So I think unless the Rockets had pre-arranged a s&t involving Chuck with Chuck, they can't trade him until the middle of the season.
The only negative i can think of with chucky is those quick fouls he commits. but overrall, the amount of rebounds he gets in such a short period of time he spends on the court is awesom. in reality chucky is a energy off the bench. i think if he comes off the bench, he wont get fouledout somany times.
I know most of you don't care, but Chuck Hayes' PER is right around the league average at 14.9 (15 is defined as 'average'). This is higher than several other players on the Rockets: Alston: 12.9 (last season) Butler: 14.6 (badly skewed by small sample size, probably closer to 10) Mutombo: 14.4 (last season) Tsakadilis: 8.4 (last season) Reed: 6.3 (last season, 8.0 career) PER isn't the be-all-end-all stat, but it is very encompassing, and it seems to suggest that Chucky may be more valuable than people seem to think. Supposing that he is in fact an 'average' PF by PER standards, he should make the NBA average salary, which for PF last season was $4.273 million/year (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/2007-03-28-frontcourt-salaries_N.htm). I don't think his offer will be anywhere near this much, and I think Morey is probably aware of this fact, ie: Hayes, if signed, will probably be a bargain, and therefore worth investing in. Even is Hayes ends up not playing much, the money due to him is not a large percentage of the Rockets' salary. Oh I thought this was interesting too, on a per 40 minute basis, Hayes is averaging 10.2 points and 12.2 rebounds. Is he worth 1.5 to 2.5 million a year for that production scaled down to 15-20 minutes a night? I dunno, maybe, but it seems like hardly much money to be invested to find out. Now if the Rockets need the roster space to get another PF, that changes things entirely.
From basketball-reference, Chuck's PER was 13.9 last season. That's still very good for a low-usage role player (PER tends to favor offensive players). Also, if you look at Chuck's PER after Yao back last season, it was very strong. He was averaging close to a double in under 30 mpg at a high efficiency. Statistically, Chuck looks even better when you look at his +/- numbers, particularly on the defensive end, and his overall efficiency stats. I'm sure Morey is all over that stuff and understands as well as anyone the value Chuck brings to the team. The real question for next season is whether Adelman will agree with the numbers and give Chuck a significant role.
Yeah my bad, I was looking at his 2 year average. And wow, his +/- is sick, on the order of Tracy and Yao's... he can't be that valuable to the team, there's got to be some other explanation. Maybe its just that he mostly played with the starting unit, because his net production being neg. tells me that he's not as valuable as you'd think? Shooting in the dark here...
FYI, I met check in suitmart on 59/Murphy. He was looking for jacket to wear with jeans. I told him to look in the extra long section. I also asked him why does Jeff keep waving his hand like he wants you to push the ball, he said that was fake, he wanted them to hurry up and get across half court to setup the offense. Now, I think Chuck is a great person, however, at 6'6" PF, he needs to improve upon too many things to be significant contributor. Check the people Adleman has coach and all of them could shoot the rock. I really don't see chuck making it out of camp and if the contract was in his agent hands, I'm sure he would sign because I dont see the many options for him.
