So you would be fine with everything you say within your house being out in the open? Or everything you say here out there with your real name attached to it? I can quote several embarrassing things you said from memory.

Obama would then look like a hypocrite since he stated his goal was to make America more transparent. The US is by far the most powerful nation in the world and it is time we stopped pandering to all these nations.

Releasing classified information that could put people's lives at risk is (hopefully) not what Barack meant by "more transparent". Come on.

By transparent he didn't mean reveal national security information.

If Assange were a hero he would be casting light on the regimes in Burma, North Korea, Iran, Sudan.

As for Manning, he was entrusted by his fellow countrymen with our most sensitive national security information, and he betrayed that trust. He must be executed.

Exactly - in my opinion, he is doing all this for the fame and the attention, he doesn't care about how many lives he endangers with this.

    Dedicated to Pvt. Manning.

"How many people are proud to be citizens of this beautiful country of ours?
The stripes and the stars-for the rights that men have died for to protect
The women and men who have broke their necks for the freedom of speech that the United States government has sworn to uphold
    Or so we're told"

The American taxpayer deserves to know that their tax money are going to the following-

Conducting drone warfare in Yemen and Pakistan
Conducting and condoning torture on an institutional level
Dealing with endemically corrupt government officials
Stifling freedoms and rights in occupied territories (a specific example being the arrest of several Iraqi intellectuals for publishing an editorial on what else? corruption)
    Savage mercenary armies
    Killing children, journalists, families

Thanks to Wikileaks, not only is America in on this, but so is the entire world. Whether or not you believe in government being scared of the people or whether you believe people should be scared of government will shape your opinion on this matter.

    Me?

Now, if Wikileaks starts publishing those rumored leaks about Russia and China's dirty little secrets-that, well, I will be a happy camper.

Wiki leaks was willing to let the government redact the names, but they refused. Considering I pay a lot in taxes and it goes toward this crap I want to know exactly how Washington is blowing my money.

Are you financing Mr. Brightside with your hard-earned money? Is Mr. Brightside accountable to you in any way? Do you rightfully elect the forces that govern Mr. Brightside-and present them with oaths and constitutions they are sworn to uphold?

No, no and no. But I financed the German government with my money and this has an immediate negative impact on American-German relations.

According to your logic, there could be no classified documents. Just because taxpayers finance the government does not mean that there does not need to be confidentiality for some documents.

I'm not saying there should not be any secrets at all.

Obviously, Wikileaks has vetted the material-and we will probably never have access to the juicy top secret stuff it probably would not be good to have spread around (ex: location of weaponized American biological agents/chemical agents and well, hey, how to build a nuclear bomb.). You know, unless the Pentagon decides to post that stuff on a TCP/IP network with 3 million users too. Hopefully not.

But this category of document is the kind that should not be kept secret. The American taxpayer deserves to know they are dealing with corrupt partners throughout provisional governments, and that this corruption goes all the way to the top (hi, Putin and Karzai). They deserve to know that Iran is a much larger threat then many have openly said. They deserve to know that their paychecks are going to killing more civilians then anyone would have the stomach to publish.

Because these factors are very important in a government that is accountable to its people-and to a people who are therefore accountable to their government's action! An ignorant populace is the first step to the death of democracy.

That would put a chilling effect on internal discussions within the government and military and would likely lead to far greater problems than we see now.

So basically you are going to trust Assange to vet things better than the State Dept. and military?

I agree we need more transparency but I question whether Assange et al are the people to do it. Also at the same time while Assange might see himself as a hero of the information age it is a fact that his leaks have led to the deaths of people who have been informants for the US military. Any praise for what he is doing has to be considered though that there is a cost in blood from this.

let's not kid ourselves, do you really think obama is trying to make the government more transparent? or if he is, will he succeed? take a look at his actions since he took office. I don't see any signs that meaningful steps towards transparency are being taken. Sometimes to solve things you just have to cut the gordian knot. As Jefferson once said...the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time by the blood of patriots and tyrants. How should we expect our government to have integrity, if we have no faith in the founding principles upon which they are based, and constantly compromise with them in order to gain some small measure of 'security'? No taxation without representation etc etc, and I'm pretty sure as part of that representation I'd like to know wtf my tax dollars are going towards.

Your logic is not strong, sorry.

So for example, since you pay taxes, you feel it's necessary to release information that several Middle East countries wanted the US to attack Iran?

    pretty lame

this is a case of a disgruntled, America-hating homosexual acting out and wanting attention (Manning).

I'm betting our fourth estate won't devote one tenth the coverage on this that it deserves.

Speaking of news, don't get me started on that nasty Sarah Palin and her show! How many times did she say you betcha or golly?

    I smell drinking game!!

So far, the most damning thing is Hillary authorizing the Dept. of State to conduct espionage, particularly against Palestinian officials, African heads of state and high ranking UN officials, including then Secretary General.

It seems to support the idea that nothing about the Iran threat is exaggerated, that Arab leaders (particular Gulf states) desire peace with Israel & are afraid of a nuclear Iran, that Putin, Berlusconi and Sarkozy are regarded as despots, that Bibi Netanyahu is a liar, that Western Africa is a haven for drug and weapon smuggling, often associated with Al-Quada, and that China is allowing nuclear material to fly between Pyongyang and Tehran.

None of those things are a great surprise, other than the cable sent out authorizing Dept. of State employees overseas to conduct human intelligence. That's damn embarrassing....dunno how Madame Clinton is going to spin this, but I suspect she'll get thrown under the bus.

Not that it's just her...a lot of these things about Iraq and Afghanistan are pretty embarrassing as well and predate her, but if people are looking for someone to take the fall for all of it, it's her.

And this is only the first day...there's more to come.

Oh they devote coverage to it all right - lots of people making nonsensical accusations about the organization or it's leader. Of course, very little will be mentioned about the actual content. Yay america!
