so far so good. Online play is very nice one you get the game going. It could take up to 5 - 10 min to find a game though, but other than that the speed / responsive time during the online play is very good.
I hate the squid on the DS... I'm not sure removing the powerslide will make the game better. Then again, there's 5 other mario karts to choose from.
Ok, after playing for the day, here are a few thoughts: -The powerslide is STILL THERE. Just not by default. Switch to 'Manual' instead of 'Automatic'. I thought it was some kind of fancy shifting, but it's just a way to turn the power-sliding on (now called drifting). -The game is really rough and fast now. You're going to have to get really good to dominate it. -The online play is flawless, and to be honest, the most fun I had. Too bad you can't chat somehow, but I really don't like listening to 15-year-olds cuss at me anyway. -The wheel is pretty well done after you get used to it. I'm a purist so I refuse to go back to the Gamecube controller. I also bought three extra wheels so I'm committed. -There's 32 tracks so far. 16 originals, 16 from older games. Pretty cool to play updated versions of some of the SNES game tracks. -So far the battle mode is boring. But it hasn't been fun since N64 anyway, so it's no big loss. I'll play it some more once I unlock everything in the racing mode, but my first impression is that the tracks are just -too- big. Overall it's a well done game, certainly worth $50, which includes a wheel.
You can play it with the game cube and the classic controllers. No wheel needed. You can get the knock-off gamestop wheels for $10, and I found the Nintendo wheels for $10 at wal-mart.
On the wheel, the #2 button. The trigger is for power sliding. The d-pad is for weapons (forward is shoot forward, back is shoot backwards). I really liked it once I got used to it. It's all bluetooth too so the Wii sensor bar isn't involved, meaning you can sit anywhere in the room and play, including at odd angles to the TV.
We got an extra wheel from gamestop for 14.99, I saw best buy has some other wheel that looks cooler for the same price.
I got an extra wheel from Best Buy for $9.99 plus tax. It is the same wheel that comes with the game. The nostalgia of the game is amazing. I was happy when I saw that the 50cc cups are fast and difficult. The return of some of the tracks is just amazing. And if you finish outside the top half, you don't get a redo. I like that.
This was one of my favorite Nintendo games ever. I rushed out to buy it yesterday and even got an extra wheel all for $60 @ Best Buy. However, after playing I was pretty disappointed. It seems like the same old Mario Kart (tracks and all), and it was just made to work with the Wii controllers. I was burned out on Mario Kart years ago, and this is a faint reminder why. It might be fun playing drunk at a party, but if I were you I'd save your money, or buy Super Smash Bros. or COD4.
There are a few other things in there that I noticed. You guys who are calling it out need to give it a little more time. There are some subtle changes that are really nice. Drafting- not sure if this was in the last version (I can't recall it). Stay behind someone for 2-3 seconds and you get a nice boost of speed to pass them. Drafting is represented by little blue air lines around your car. Jumping tricks- Shake the wheel at the right time when you're jumping and you do a trick. When you land, it gives you a speed boost. Half pipes- on new tracks AND old tracks, they've added a kind of boost strip to the top of some of the steeper banks that you can jump off of and do jump tricks, which in turn give you a boost when you land. So if you combine these tricks with the old tracks, you can certainly get more mileage out of them. And again, I stress that you use the Manual mode for drifting/power sliding.
It's been on there, but not as dramatic as it is now. What is new is the slingshot if you draft enough behind someone. I do like this a bunch. It's not a revolutionary jump in MK, but it's clearly a strong step up, and I'd say the biggest leap in Mario Karts since the N64 version hit. The half pipes are neat, but I need to practice them a bit more. Only did a couple of circuits yesterday. Need to get wheel #2 for the wife. Evan
Hidden Penis? You decide: http://raymitheminx.blogspot.com/2008/06/im-not-pervert-but-that-is-such-dick.html
Dude. Get a life. People who go around playing games just so they can find hidden innuend... SWEET MOTHER OF MOSES, that's a HUGE PENIS!
This was the first game my sister bought and I love it. Very entertaining and I like how you can compare your times to people near you and globally.
