Which is exactly why we shouldn't let fans be voters. I love Yao, I think he's the 2nd best center in the L if you count Ben Wallace as a foward. I think he should be atleast co - ROY (I don't think he can win outright with the late season collapse and him and Amare really having almost the same stats) but I don't think I'm the only one that felt he really shouldn't have started the All - Star game. The voters might be a little biased, but it was Yao's award to lose, and he lost it down the stretch, that's all. Hopefully he'll be better next year, maybe the Chinese NT coach can make him better, though I don't see that happening. Really I wish they higher some one with more cred, if not a US coach atleast some on that used to head the Euro leagues, maybe a coach from Yugoslavia or something. China hired Milo for soccer, I'm still advocating spending some dole on bskball.
My point is, ROY is a "who is the sport writers' favorite?" contest. It may mean something because at least it is the recognition from the sport writer. However, it does not mean that the majority of people would agree with it. Votes from fans are the bias from the majority of people. Votes from the reporters are the bias from the reporters. I ,personally, do not believe that the vote from reporters have more substance than the vote from others. Either way, it is bias. Therefore the most important achievement for the players is to help his team to win the championship.
How come then that Yao Ming was listed as the number ONE Rookie for the Season on the NBA Got milk listing and was number ONE on the Fan voting on the NBA.com poll also his statistics were 8percent better than Amare though he played less minutes To day a serious wrong was issued to the Rockets and Yao Ming!
It couldn't possibly be because Yao only shot 39% in April and blocked less shots than Amare despite being seven inches taller...
Only Stoudemire can be a better player by having more rebounds but less in every other stat...it doesn't work for Yao. sorry.
yaos 2.3 apg to amares 1.1. 84% freethrow of yao, to 65% of amare. more....following links. april http://www.nba.com/playerfile/yao_ming/season_splits.html http://www.nba.com/playerfile/amare_stoudemire/season_splits.html
Yao just did not play well enough down the stretch and I guess he lost the award as a result. He has so much potential and you just want him to break it and explode it..but he still haven't shown that to me, only occasionally. There is no doubt he needs a legend to coach him and makes him better, be more aggressive ect., better training, fitness, diet. When he put on a lot of muscle and increase his stamina, he's going to be a dominant force, until then it's just going to be a wait and see thing. Hopefully losing the ROY will motivate him to be even better. On a second thought, I don't think Amare is all that as people make him to be. The only thing that I am impressed with him is his jumping ability and his explosiveness, that's it. His offensive game is inconsistent. All he can do is rebound well with his height and explode to the basket with his height, but he can't shoot the ball though. I think the ROY should be at least Co-ROY with Yao, but oh well.
