I am admittedly ignorant in regards to Eminem...but what little I have heard I don't get the big deal. What little I have heard has sounded very similar to each other.

Could a fan try a bit harder to explain his talent/originality and how his lyrics make one think? Maybe post some that you find to be the best?

After watching the highlights from last night, I can safely say that Moby and Eminem combined have about 1/99th of the musical talent Bruce Springsteen has.

You say that as though it were unlikely.

Eminem isn't untalented but he isn't particularly musical. His songs sound like the soundtrack to some delinquent puppet on Sesame Street. Yeah, it's funny and well-crafted, but it doesn't really stay with you.

Also, just because his lyrics are basically id-driven drivel doesn't make them particularly expressive either. Believe it or not, not everyone secretly wants to beat up their mom or girlfriend. The best lyricists either tell a good story or use their personal experiences as a means to demonstrate various archetypes. Eminem does neither of these.

As for Eminem being the most influential person in America, I'll agree only when he affects my bank accounts the way Alan Greenspan does.

Are you serious? Moby and Radiohead are not anywhere near Elvis, The Beatles or the Rolling Stones - and they NEVER will be. Techno is just a fad... like Disco.

Eminem and Radiohead are good, Moby and Creed SUCK a$$.

    Sonny,

We can agree on Creed, but er, no, on Eminem. See subtomic's post as he, like he always does, eloquently points out why Eminem is this generation's current version of the Starland Vocal Band and Bay City Rollers...a fad.

Moby is not even considered techno anymore by a lot of people. I mean if you even listen to "Play", you will see that there might be only 2 tracks that can be considered "techno" in "Bodyrock" and "Machete". I don't even know if there is any "techno" tracks on "18". But I can guarantee that "Play" will still be considered a great album 20 years from now unlike any of the garbage that Eminem spews out.

Oh and BTW - Moby released a half ambient, half alternative rock album about 5 years ago named "Animal Rights". And yes he played all the instruments, and did not use samples.

So, I would say that he is little more than a "techno" guy.

Me thinks that people are believing what they are reading or hearing from uninformed idio..,er, sources like Eminem about Moby.

I just don't care for Moby, his music is a fad... agree to disagree, blah blah blah... He sure as hell isn't Elvis or the Beatles though... That's what me thinks.

Eminem's grown on me a bit.

He's OK when he's not rapping about some little tennie-booper or his mother.

    Yeah. Moby rules.

Honestly, I really don't like the sort of club people make of certain bands that are a cut above and if you don't think so... well you are unintelligent.

Isn't music more about personal taste anyway? If you ask me, I think the Rolling Stones suck a big fat horse ****. I think Bob Dylan is decent, but I couldn't listen to him very much without getting violently ill.

Led Zeppelin has some good songs. But it makes me truly angry the way they get treated as the Jesus H. Christ of music. Stairway to Heaven. Good song. Great song? No. Best song of all time? Not even close.

I'm really sick and tired of certain people around here who listen to music to be elitist and not for the music itself.

For me, the 'Untouchables' in terms of music are a very select group of artists who have either 1) Albums that I can leave in my car CD player for years at a time and never get tired of them, 2) Have a certain quality which I like to describe as "sounding right", or 3) Have that one song that I can't stop listening to.

    Elvis Presley - #2
    The Beatles - #2
    Michael Jackson - #3
    Dave Matthews Band - #1
    Nirvana - #2
    Willie Nelson - #2

There's my dream team, and it kick's everybody elses ass. ;)

here's an idea...if you don't like eminem...don't listen to him.

i don't find it necessary for him to die for him to be utterly irrelevant in my life.

    Sonny,

You missed my point. I mentioned Moby not as someone that is on the same level as Elvis, Beatles, etc., but someone who I feel will endure over time compared to Eminem and Creed.

I was a little over the top with moe and Nomar, but I brought up Elvis, Beatles, etc. saying that those are artists that have been proven over time. I feel, laugh all you want, that Moby has a chance of being there, mainly just because of "Play". Now, if he keeps following up his albums with "18" like albums maybe not..:D But regardless, Play will be an album that will be looked back on in the future, IMO, just like "Dark Side of the Moon", "Who's Next", "Raw Power", and other old classic albums.

    Nomar,

I know that when I first started talking music here on the BBS that I came off as elitist. I am sorry for acting like that, and I have really tried of late not to be like that. Several people here like Jeff and SirCharlesFan made me realize that music is all about taste.

With that being said, it still makes my blood boil to read stuff that I don't agree with on music here, but I know a lot of times, that it is a test to see how I will react. Honestly, I don't care who likes Eminem, Creed, etc. But I do care about people proclaiming these artists to be greater than artists that have endured over time like Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, etc. I'm not talking about specific incidents; I'm just saying in general.

OK, let's address an issue that some of you feel necessary to bring up: Eminem hitting women. Where have you heard, read, seen or envisioned Eminem hitting a woman?? Don't give me any BS about him beating up a blow up doll. It's irrelevant unless he is known to have smacked a woman around.

In regards to his lyrical talent(or lack thereof), we can go on and on forever because some of you simply can not grasp rap in it's true form...street poetry. Either you get it or you don't and never will, so go listen to your Radiohead(who I also happen to like).

Lastly, I'm not going to be stupid enough to put him on the same level as timeless artists like Led Zeppelin, but I'm also not going to go so far as to say we'll be listening to Moby or Radiohead 20 years from now either. IMO none of those three spectacularly great, enduring artists. They all put out good music for the time, but are hardly legendary.

You're right Crisco, but you can say that about pretty much any song you hear on the radio that gets overplayed like J-Lo/JaRule(I can't stand them), Nickelback, Adema, Default, insert other Creedish band here, even Bruce Springsteen's new song(that I really like, but hear about 2-3 times an hour).

    Pimp,

Singing a song in which you kill your wife is not hitting a woman?? Oh, yeah, I guess not. Hitting them means they would still live.
