Why was yesterday (Monday, 01/02/2012) a day off for most people?

Both daughters had to go to school. And since one needs to be at school around 7am, and the other had basketball practice at 7am, that meant I had to wake up at 5:30am anyway.

Most folks were off last week (I was as well, but as a contractor it was unpaid time off). The really smart or lucky people took this entire week off too.

They gave us both Friday and Monday off. I did not complain.

I suspect most non-retail companies have X number of holidays throughout the year. We get 8 plus 2 other days of our choosing. Most companies give New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (2), Christmas and MLK or President's Day. When any of the days that can, fall on a wekeend, they give one observed on Friday or Monday.

That all makes sense to me. I have 12 holidays off a year. But Jan 2 seems weird to me. I'd rather have the day after Superbowl Sunday off.

I think when you get hired your benefits package includes a certain amount of days off for holidays. So, rather than go through crap of trying to explain why you don't the agreed upon days off, your company probably just gives you the nearest day off (likely when the least work would get done and least money would be made).

    EDIT: what bobrek said

Monday was another normal day where I'm at. It was like NY didn't happen.

Is this how they expect us to start the year of Armageddon?

Lazy Americans, can't let a Holiday go to waste if it falls on a weekend. I think the Post Office observed New Years on Monday because I didn't get any mail.

95% of our workstaff didnt show up yesterday they were told they didnt have to. I had to go in for a different reason myself, but what I felt bad about for the people who were hourly it wasnt a paid holiday so they had a choice to use the paid holiday the got for sunday on monday or just lose the hours.

(instead of banking that paid holiday)

So it seems weird to have the day after NYD off, but it would make sense if they gave you the day after SuperBowl Sunday off?

What does observing a holiday to keep amount of yearly days off manageable and consistent have to do with laziness?

OMG, you didn't get any mail on Jan 2? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY?!

I'm with XeroBull on this one.

I always viewed NYD as a "day of rest" after NYE. The event is NYE, not NYD.

Whereas Super Bowl Monday would be the "day of rest" after the Super Bowl.

What's the point in having the day after the day after NYE off other than a business needing to manage its annual holidays?

What a strange comment (and thread). Americans get way fewer holidays and vacation days that many parts of the world, and a few more than a couple.

None other than that, but Superbowl Sunday isn't a holiday at all.

Exactly what I'm saying - if Jan 2 is OK, why wouldn't the day after SB Sunday be OK? Neither are a real holiday.

Don't get all crazy on me, Dave. It's a bull**** session.

How did a CITY like New York (or are you talking about the state) "not happen"? :( I'm confused.

It is a day of rest. It doesn't have to have anything to do with being hung-over from the night before. There is some value in just taking a holiday here and there. New Year's is as good an excuse as any.

Incidentally, I've always felt like February 29th should be a holiday. It doesn't come around very often, so it always feels like a special day.

Perhaps a better question is why was yesterday, in fact, Monday?

Are you intentionally being obtuse here?
