Unfortunately given how our credit system works managing debt is actually the best strategy. Having great credit isn't just about not having debt as lenders aren't interested in people who don't take on debt but about people who manage debt well. Not saying that is a good thing but that our whole system is driven on credit, in other words debt..
You don't have to have debt to have great credit, especially credit card debt. A good debt to have is house mortgage which most of us have to carry because of the large balance but it is good because of the low rate. For credit card, I have several but I pay off the balance every month so I don't have to pay interest. In your credit report, all it says is your avg balance and if you make payments regularly, you have good credit.
