Why Brent Barry? How many times have we all said this, including me: Because he solves our backcourt problems. We've all criticized Francis because he plays too much like a 2 guard instead of a 1 guard. Problem is, he's too small to guard other 2's and we need him to play as a 1 because we have no one else. Francis is a SG in a PG's body. We need someone who can be a PG, but in a SG's body. Best solution is Brent Barry. His positives were best listed above by Sherlock (e.g. Passing, shooting, court vision, size, maturity, character, availability). Negatives are age, ...and that's about it.
Barry's not much of a defender. That's a significant negative in my book. He's a good player, and I would like to get him, but I think the questions of overpaying him are legit. The MLE for four years is definitely pushing his value. Unfortunately, he's going to be a coveted free agent this summer.
The poor draft day decisions are absolutely killing the Rockets right now. We have a 39 year old backup PG, dammit! Remember, just 3 years ago we had 3 first rounders. Not to mention a #15 overall pick the year before which we used on Jason f'n Collier. You need successful drafts in order to build depth. PERIOD. Now we're talking about signing Brent Barry to a 4-year deal? Bullsh*t. He's gonna want around $6 million a year. I'll pass.
i'm pretty sure we have to pay maloney even next year and then he's finally off. brent would be way better than jon. jon shoots and hustles but that's about it. barry can pass, score more, and run better. if he could be had for the mle, i would do it. our guard positions would be taken care of finally. i know everyone wants him to start but i would just have him as the 3rd guard backing up both positions playing about 30 minutes a night or so. imagine, we could actually have somebody to play at the guard position behind steve and cat who doesn't blow and make them play 40+ minutes every night. and he can shoot, even better. bring in a pf who can at least bring something on each offense and defense and let mo or cato back that guy and yao up and we would be much better off.
It's not his age but his lack of Malone-like workouts that concern me about him as he gets towards the end of his next contract (if it's a Rox contract, that is). That said he is an excellent possibility with his talent and acknowledged contract demands. BB will pretty much get to select his next destination. Perhaps he should come to the team for which he was a ballboy back in his boyhood days -- the hometown Houston Rockets!
agree, but i could live with 4 yrs of mle, though i didn't wanna do it with posey. Now we're talking about signing Brent Barry to a 4-year deal? you talk as if he sucks. while it would be good if we already had depth from the draft, it's unlikely we'd pick someone appreciably better or who wouldn't cost at least as much.
your comparing apples and oranges. Those players are superstars... last i checked barry isnt even close.
You know another player who could play a similar role for us as Barry is Mike Miller. I don't know if Memphis is that interested in trading him, but he's been inconsistent this year. I think he's good enough to share point duties with someone. And he's tall enough to guard 3s.
I have a feeling that it's going to get tiresome explaining to different posters this offseason why a guy like Barry would be so important to this team, so next time someone has a question as to why Barry would have a solid impact on the Rockets, please just refer them to my pamphlet.
Signing Brent is a no brainer. I will be shocked if we do not pull it off. At least he is cheap and will not cost us any player. Hopefully we can move some other players to get a better fit at the 4. Signing Brent in the summer will just do it for me.
I rather have Francis as our guard then Barry. Francis still has more potential and can be smarter when experience of playoffs helps him out.
In an unrelated story, ESPN reported early on Tuesday that Duke's Deng will be testing the NBA Draft waters. Boy how I wish we could get that guy one way or the other. He will just be what the doctor othered. He is a sure fire start IMO.
It is inconceivable for Steve to be smarter than Brent. Steve's playoffs experience will sure help him but will not give him any cerebral advantage over Brent......basketball wise.
whose team sucks worse than the other? Brent Barry's or Steve Francis'? Whose team has said that in the very next season they're going into a rebuilding process? Brent Barry's or Steve Francis'?
My goodness. Brent Barry isn't some freaking savior that is going to carry this team to the promised land. He's been a lifelong role player, who averages 10.7 ppg amd 3.9 assists for his career.
I don't think anyone's suggesting he is. But, he would be more than adequate in fullfilling our PG needs. No one here is saying trade Steve for Brent, he can be obtained through Free Agency. And I think if we do sign Brent, we should really go after T-mac. Steve's just too small for the two and not fast enough to make up for his height. Brent, T-Mac, JJ, PF (whoever we can get that fullfills our needs), and Yao Ming. Much better than Brent, Steve, JJ and Yao, definitely better than our current line up. IMO atleast
Thank you for the in-depth analysis...let's go to NBA.com and decide Barry is worthless based upon his career ppg and assists. Let's totally ignore that he's... * 6'6", a former Slam Dunk contest winner and a great finsher on a fast break. * has shot 56.1% from inside the arc and 42.5% from the arc in his last 3 seasons as a Sonic. * has avg'd 36 mpg and 12.7 ppg in his last 3 Sonics season while dishing out 5.7 assists with 2.2 TO's. * is a career 82.0% FT shooter so he's good to have on the court at crunch time. And all of this for MLE $. Ohh...I forgot...we're looking for a savior...under-priced over performers need not apply. I mean how much value can a guy have over the last 3 seasons when he puts up double figure ppg while only taking 1 out of every 10 of his teams' shots?
