Did one of them yell "Yo, go get my gun", or not? And did they try to run down the officer, or not?

The article above claims that both occured, after the police officers had identified themselves.

If so, then bachelor party or not, they were acting as criminals. If not, then it is really impossible to know exactly what happened...so many sides to the story.

Whatever the case may be, the article does mention a lot of valid points not about, though indirectly associated with the case. Black on black crime not being cried about about with so much fervor. Decrease in police fatalities. Fact that in this particular case officer firing the first shot was himself black. Etc., etc.

So then there is no way the police can ever escape the charges of racism so long as they keep arresting black men. Even if a sepaarte task force was setup of only black cops to arrest black men, they could still get charged with racism?

BTW, a power trip is not racism. Racism is defined as thinking you're better than another person because of your race. people of the same race can have prejudices about each other, that doesn't make it racist.

Anyway, back to the point of the thread. I'll say it again, Sharpton is respected because behind all that bluster and huffing and puffing, he gives a voice to his people (never mind what his true motives are).

There's a Chinese councilman in NY by the name of John Liu. He's a media w**** and is always on TV as much as possible. I recognize this, and so do my other Chinese friends. But yet we still appreciate him because we know that (even though his motives aren't pure), the results are that we Chinese people feel like we finally have a voice.

    Did you read the article?

I can't say if it was factual or not, but if so, you are misrepresenting the facts.

Shots weren't fired until the driver of the car started attempting to run the officer down.

According to the article, they didn't shoot first, then ask questions later. They presented themselves as officers, heard a member of the party talk about getting his gun, and then were attempted to be run over with a car....

    ...then they shot.

50 rounds is probably excessive....but if I was about to be run over with a car, I'd be okay with a freaking rocket launcher, much less 50 rounds.

Those are your assumptions. I was just stating just because it was minorities doing the shooting does not mean that race did not play a factor. Even if they have prejudices against their own that still makes it race-related maybe not racist but definitely race-related. I'm not saying racism should always be placed on police officers either but saying that because they are the same race that it (race) cannot play a part in their decision is simple-minded.

To quote myself from my preious post:

The end of this statement should be especially against members of their own race.

One of the survivors has said that race was not an issue. He called the cops morons, but stated clearly that he did not think race was an issue.

So just because he says it makes it so? I don't know if it was or wasn't I am simply saying it could have been. None of us know.

They have done studies on the perception of crime compared to actual crime and disorder statistics and have found that neighborhoods that were majority black were seen, even by black residents, as more crime ridden and disorderly even when compared to majority white or hispanic or asian neighborhoods with greater levels of crime and disorder.

Everyone in the US has been programmed to think blacks are worse in just about everything.

If something happens to you . . because you are black, asian, white etc
it does not matter who [or what color they are] is doing it to you
it can still be racially motivated.

I guess for general purposes. . .we need a standard language
what does it mean to be RACIST

Racism is anything bad that happens to someone who isn't a white male. At least judging from various responses in various threads that's the definition everyone else seems to go by.

EDIT: Actually, I shouldn't have said 'white male' because the gender doesn't really mean anything in terms of racism. That's more of a definition of discrimination.

Probably not. RR never lets the facts interfere with his patented blanket "everyone is racist" comments he's so fond of posting....sometimes even in the wrong threads.

No, but I'll take his opinion over all the armchair QBs/bloggers/political activists opinions. Unlike them, he was actually THERE.

That's fine and most people would do the same I think. Like I said, I am not taking sides on the issue.

Understood. Frankly, neither am I. I just think it's funny that some people are just SO SURE that this is racism when they weren't even there.

I just find it disgusting that as soon as it happened it was deemed by the media as basically being a murder right away.
They played up the whole thing about how he was going to be married and that it was his bachelor party without saying any of the facts. The survivors are being talked about like they are these great heroes on tv and on the radio. Here are the facts of the case so far (copied and pasted mostly from wikipedia):

Now if you turn on the news and they talk about this you hear about a man who was set to be married the next day being shot outside of his bachelor party. You don't hear that all the men he was with were criminals and that the only reason that the cops confronted these men in the first place was because they had been told that they had threatened to shoot someone in the club. According to the media they were just at a normal bachelor party and just left normally. Now that Guzman guy and the other guy he was with are all talked about as these great men. They seem like thugs to me.

Maybe the cops made a mistake. Maybe they didn't but just imagine being in this situation. You are undercover checking out a notoriously dangerous strip club. You are told that a man got into an argument with someone in the club and said that he was going to go get his gone. The man and his friends go to their car and you confront them and tell them to freeze and you announce that you are the police (which it appears like they did). Those people who were supposedly going to get their gun try to run you over with their car and won't stop? What do you do? That stuff happens in a split second. As a cop you just want to live and get out've it to go home and see your family. If someone runs you over with their car they can kill you. If they had a gun they can kill you. I would shoot until I didn't have any bullets left or until they stopped. They didn't stop. They ran over an officer. Almost anyone in that situation would fire. I know I would.

Sadly, if you turn on the news you will hear how these guys were minding their own business and that they were just at your normal bachelor party where a stripper jumps out've a
cake and everyone is just having a fun, safe time.

The bolded part isn't fact. It is merely the side of the story that that guy told.

Why would the driver of the car stop? He was being shot at. He didn't do anything wrong. If I am being shot at, and didn't do something wrong, and people in the car are dead or dying, I am not going to stop and hope the people who shot us while we were unarmed decide to stop their shooting.

yeah and a bunch of witnesses at the club backed the story up.

the cops did not start shooting until after Bell and his entourage rammed their car into one of them.

this is not a valid point because its two different issues. no one should be expected to be shot by the police if they aren't comitting crime. period. the reason a lot of people don't cry about black on black crime is because alot of black on black crime is criminal on criminal crime when violence is involved. .

if a black kid kills a black old lady in a robbery, who is the black community going to cry to. the kid's family. criminals aren't part of some larger organization that's supposed to be protecting the community. its an apples and oranges comparison.

Something is messed up with your timeline.
    Your version is:
shooting starts -> told to stop -> run over a cop
    It really goes:
told to stop -> run over a cop -> shooting starts
Your argument would be valid using your alternate timeline, but makes no sense using the real timeline.

A group of criminals threatens to shoot someone and then hits a cop with their car, I'm going to have to side with the cops on this one, though that is hardly unusual.
