Because we ALL are on some level selfish. So, if someone agrees that there is systematic racism and they are not the victim of the racism, then they think that diminishes their own accomplishments. That is why when racism or strife is brought up, people will say "I fought hard for everything I have" or they will say "I have been oppressed myself in X, Y or Z" and if that does not work they will say "My parents came to this country in 1900 with nothing" and if that does not work they will say, "lots of other groups were oppressed and no longer are, suck it up".

Also, when you are not a member of a group being oppressed, sometimes it is hard to believe because you do not directly experience it and especially now, it can be more subtle than in the past. So many people simply do not believe it exists.

Last, people are tribal. They like being around people that are similar to them. That can be race, but it can also be cultural or economic. So a kid from Garfield Park in Chicago that is black has less in common with someone that lives in a gated community that is white and has never experienced poverty or violence. That is a tough bridge to gap IF people do not want to bridge the gap.

It is a lot easier to call a black kid from the South Side of Chicago an animal that chooses to live in violence in poverty than to say society and the decision makers (that are white) bear a large amount of responsibility.

False. If you are willing to wear second hand mens swim trunks, you can find these same trunks on Ebay for as little as $12. It's a little bit like wearing used underwear, but if money is a concern, then you can chin up to it.

The used luxury swim trunks market on Ebay is actually a hidden gem.

Do you need us to set up a GoFundMe for you?

Maybe @KingCheetah and @tinman can throw their lunch money in for today so you can get a bathing suit.

I can always ask @hotballa if he can maybe do your laundry pro bono.

One of the strangest uhh cultural norms I ever learned about -- I believe 50 Cent personally ended that one for the most part in the early 2000's.

The other is must nut in the girl ... I don't get it are you marking your turf?

Count me in I enjoy helping the less fortunate -- shopping for clothing on eBay is a sad, embarrassing way to live life.

The Ebay swim trunks are not for me; that's ridiculous. I actually don't even shop for my own clothes. I have a clothier. However, can you imagine the delight that my employees will feel when they received a gently-used pair of Vineyard Vines swim trunks as a Christmas present? Joy will overcome them!

LOL so you can't afford new ones for your employees? does your clothier help you choose your employees' used trunks?

I taught myself how to swim...from holding onto the side of the pool kicking my legs, to my 1st attempt to actually go under water, to finally being able to chill in the deep end with no floatie and having races

I used to go to a certain summer camp as a kid, and about once a week we’d go out to a pool...if not for that, I doubt I ever would’ve learned...I had no access to a pool except through that opportunity until I was much older

I agree with what you said, but I would add that kids definitely need parental/adult supervision at all times in and around the pool when they are still learning to swim or don’t know how. In the case of my friend and his wife that lost their two year old to a drowning accident, everyone had just exited the pool and hot tub on Memorial Day last year, and the child no longer had her floaties on. While everyone was saying goodbye and had their back to the pool and hot tub, the child made her way back into the hot tub without her floaties and the rest is a tragedy that those parents will have to live with for the rest of their lives.

Very sad to hear that and can't imagine how your friends must be feeling.

I agree it's not just having a body of water to swim in but also having safety to learn how to swim and also someone to learn from. Most people who can't swim don't just fall in water and suddenly drawn. There is an instinct to thrash and keep your head above water. What happens is people panic and tire themselves out eventually succumbing. Treading water or dog paddling uses a lot of energy. If you're not comfortable with water that is about all you can do and depending on how in shape you are you can tire quickly.

No worries. My gardener has a pair of z cavaricci jeans he can hand down to you.

Perhaps you can trim them and turn them into shorts or a bathing suit.

I assure no one will judge your fashion sense based on your limited resources.

They have started a non-profit organization in their daughter’s honor (Naomi’s Grace) with the mission of promoting water safety education and training so that no other family has to experience what they have.
