hey i have a question im also deciding on either the 360 or PS3 does the ps3 online lag like crazy? back then i used to play ps2 online and i had it directly plugged into my modem with a 5 mb connection and it lagged like DIAL UP while i played... i know ppl with 360's that have 1.5 megabyte DSL and dont lag. oh and does the 360 have wifi where i can connect to xbox live through it? are the developers of games (ex. EA) still responsible for maintaining servers like it was on ps2?
There's certainly a big gap in storage space between the two disc formats (Blu-ray and DVD), and with most 360 games already using up most of the space provided by DVDs, it certainly wouldn't be strange to see some games only possible on the PS3 due to the storage space provided by Blu-ray (some PS3 games are probably like that already). This, along with the standard HDD, could help developers do some things on the PS3 that would be difficult, if not impossible, to do on the 360. But it will probably take time for both to be utilized in such a way, especially if PS3 sales continue to trail behind the 360 (although I guess its sales in Europe and Japan could make up for that...eventually). In that case, you'd probably only get 1st party studios taking advantage of that technology. 7-8 years is way too long. I could see this generation being somewhat longer than usual (except for maybe the transition between the Wii and its successor), but 8 years from now, PS3 development will probably be winding down, if not nearly dead. And that would be under the best case scenario for Sony. I do agree that the PS3 will probably have some long legs. Ideally, games coming out in the next 3-4 years will pretty much put to shame most of the games released in the last 2 years or so (both in terms of graphics and hopefully gameplay). I probably haven't played online as much as I should have, but I've had no lag issues with the games I've played (mostly Resistance and Warhawk). My connection isn't all that great either (~600 Kb down, ~200 Kb up). These games use dedicated servers, so maybe things wouldn't be so good with games that use P2P tech, although that probably wouldn't differ much from XBL since it would use basically the same tech. Lag does depend on a variety of issues, but in general, I don't think lag is all that bad for PS3 games (PS3 games, in general, probably have the least amount of lag actually). I don't see how that would be a problem, unless I'm misunderstanding your question. If you're wanting to know if there is a WiFi adapter, there is, but it is really overpriced IIRC. Developers have the option of using their own servers, using Sony's servers, or using P2P. A few of the major games (Resistance, MotorStorm, Warhawk, etc.) use dedicated servers IIRC (or dedicated servers and P2P) in order to reduce lag. Some of the other games, particularly the multiplatform games available on bother platforms, use P2P. If I'm not mistaken, EA uses their own servers for both PSN and XBL. They wouldn't agree to use XBL unless they could use their own servers IIRC.
If your TV is 1080p then go PS3, otherwise play with all of your glorious friends online till the proverbial cows come home.
I sold my 360 and bought a Wii, I think i'm happy or maybe not i'm not sure, but if i wil buy a new console again, i would chose 360 again, but i do hope that they add a HD DVD station to the 360.
Xbox Live just celebrated it's 5th year in existence and all that experience shows when it comes to comparing 360 to the other next gen systems. Live is far superior then anything Sony or Nintendo have right now and it's mainly because they have been doing the online gaming longer then Sony and Nin. 360 has an HDMI port now and it is capable of 1080p output. You can download high definition movies to rent if your into that stuff. Personally I don't download any movies, but currently Live is the largest provider of online movies (legal) then any other service so I imagine it is doing well. You said you don't care so much for the online gaming, but I will tell you what it makes a world of difference when you have a group of friends to play with online. Much more fun then gaming alone. To me unless you are a mark for blue ray then 360 is the way to go.
I'll be getting a 360 within the next few months. Here's why: Online- It blows PS3 out of the water. Not only can I play with friends, it has Street Fighter 2. Established library. Sony's brand isn't as good as it was several years ago. Their quality just isn't superior any more. The only con I see with 360 is that their library is very 'westernized' with tons of shooters and lots of violent games. I like my gaming balanced, and it's rare for a shooter to win me over, even awesome games like Halo. The only reason I would get a PS3 in the future would be for Japanese RPG-style games. I usually pick one console, then buy the other two as they mature and get cheaper. For this gen, I went Wii, then 360, then probably a used PS3 in a couple of years unless they get that awesome, must-have game (like a FF7 remake). Waiting is good because you can get fantastic games used on half.com for cheap.
This will probably just take this thread far off-topic, but... I seriously do not see the big gap between XBL and the PSN when it comes to playing games (as mentioned earlier, I do see the gap in content on the XBLM vs PS Store...at least with video content). I could understand how XBL would be much better than the online service for the PS2 (or possibly the Wii in some instances), where you have to put in individual names for each individual game, you might be unable to track the progress of your friends (or what they're playing), and there is a lack of some basic communication features like voice or video chat. You don't really have those same problems on the PS3 though, and it isn't like it is impossible to play some games online with a group of friends. Maybe not quite as easy as XBL, but still pretty easy to do and still a lot of fun IMO. I think for most people that only want to play online games occasionally (if ever), the service should offer them everything they want and more. There are a few features that the PS3 lacks that would help with the community aspect of online play (like the ability to view/use the XMB in all games), although hopefully that will all be addressed with the release of Home and/or a future firmware upgrade. Once those features are added, the two services will basically be identical when it comes to features IMO (might be some extra features on both services that don't really mean much though). Of course, there are also some areas where the PSN is superior for playing games, although at this point, this has only resulted in a better online experience on a game-by-game basis (UT3 and Burnout Paradise will probably be much better on the PS3 due to the PSN). The PS3 will have SF2 as well, or at least the HD remake anyway.
well, if you are an american, you should buy american products. so ya, get 360. help domestic companies, and developers. instead of sending money to japan, why not buy MIA stuff same thing with cars. heck, i'm not even an american, yet i buy all american stuff as much as i can at least
I already own an XBOX360, but just purchased a PS3 for my new media room. The PS3 just happens to be one of the best Blu-ray players on the market AND you can play games on it AND its cheaper than most Blu-ray players that are not even as good. Also picked up a cheap Toshiba HD DVD from Walmart, so I'm format neutral.
the Streetfighter community has been on board with Microsoft since Xbox1 (SF Anniversary edition) and currently with the 360 (SF2 Turbo). if you want established competition (top tournament players), you go xbox cause that's the only way you can on the console. I don't know how many of them will migrate to ps3 when it comes out.
how do the top tournament players compete when there isn't even a good fighting stick available on the 360? if they really are the top tier players, i think a good joystick would be required.
they just came out with a super expensive joystick (($150??)) some people just hack their 360 controller and put in their Anniversary joystick or people use the DOA or Hori Stick (me). I'm not trying to flame Playstation chow, so dont turn it into one. Go on Shoryuken.com and you find all the tourney players and their xbox live tags.
If you want to game now, XBox360. The game lineup for PS3 just isn't very good still. You can always buy the PS3 later. That's how I've viewed it all. I purchased the HD DVD player for the X360 so I'm good there (although not 1080p). Remember from a developer's standpoint: the playstations have their own coding language that game studios have to learn and use when making/developing PS games. This makes some studios decide to just pass on a PS release. With that said, I find it really hard to believe there isn't some kind of a "code-translator" for game companies so they can release on every console. In essence, if there is no code translation available, game companies have to develop a game twice almost. Sometimes budgets don't allow for this, nor do they have the budgeted time. This could be why the game line up for the PS3 is still not very big.
