of course it helped that team had arguably the greatest center who ever played the game playing in his prime....and was the previous year's tested champion. go rockets, nonetheless. this is clearly a playoff team at this point, so it's time to enjoy however far this ride takes us.
if the rockets make it to the finals... (win or lose) ...would they make a movie out of it like they did for the A's with Moneyball? I think so. The A's didn't win it all, they just far exceeded expectations. Plus, we have our own streak that could be a big part of the movie. The reenactment of win number 22 against the Lakers would be awesome to see on the big screen
Just because we won as the 6th seed doesn't mean "anything can happen". I drink the homer kool aid daily, but no one on this team even comes close to being worthy of holding dream's jock. If anything, the situation playing the Mavs' story this year runs a closer comparison to the 95 Rockets.
Times in which we have been a 6th seed: 81- Lost Finals in 6 to Celtics 82- Lost First Round in 3 to Sonics (best of 3) 87- Lost Second Round in 6 to Sonics 88- Lost First Round in 4 to Mavs (best of 5) 91- Lost First Round in 3 to Lakers (best of 5) 95- Won Championship 6 times- 2 Finals Appearances 3 Times In Which We Have Advanced If we finish 6th, lets give 2nd round a 50% chance and finals a 33% chance? Spoiler BTW I know all this **** is useless. Just thought it would be fun to look
I know that. Olajuwon was not setting the world on fire that season, why do you think we were a 6th seed to begin with? We had just traded away Thorpe, and the hangover after winning the previous year, well, nobody was expecting much from the Rockets that year. So yes, 'anything can happen'. Unless you think this team is literally INCAPABLE of beating SA, or OKC, or LA.. Do I think they are going to win the championship this year? I would be very pleasantly surprised if they do, but I would not bet on it. But it's certainly not IMPOSSIBLE. My point is that Rockets fans should know better than to just automatically count this team out and give them no chance.
Just get in, then we can plot our course. I would be THRILLED with being in the playoffs and getting past the first round. That would be wonderful, but to go to the Finals and get blown out would be a bummer, BUT I would take it. That would be quite a ride.
I like our 33% chance, but I really feel poised to win the rest of our remaining games and take the 4th seed.
Boy, was I wrong! My bad. Sorry, everybody that believed what I was saying. Feel free to stand up and say you believed me by posting something about how this thread was dead long ago.
Olajuwon was absolutely setting the world on fire. He was 3rd team all NBA...he was 2nd team all Defense...he finished 5th in MVP voting...and he was coming off the season before where he won an MVP award and an NBA Finals MVP. It's not the same thing. It's not remotely close. I will root for the Rockets like crazy...but I'm not going to play make believe. The NBA is the worst of the sports to make the "anything can happen" argument.
