they hashed that out at length in a past thread....IIRC, they also had correspondence with some of the guys that put togther the CBA FAQ...

    put it this way.

If NIKE, aaeliott or GATER says it is so...then I believe them...they have spent hours and hours pouring over the technical details of the FAQ.

I'm not sure why I'm doing this because I wouldn't trade Taylor for Tim Thomas but...

    JBC -
I think you're confusing something. The assigned player exception is the "15% rule".

A legal example of the APE is the "$2.4m player for the $2m player". This is fairly simple arithmatic.... $2m * 115 % + 100k = $2.4m. Stated another way, the APE allowed Team A to increase the $2m contract value of Player A by $400k to obtain (from Team B) Player B whose contract value was $2.4m.

An illegal example. Let's say Team A also has a $1m TE. We've already seen that using the APE, Player A's APE trade value is $2.4m. The TE of $1m can't be combined with the APE value to trade for Player C whose contract is $3.4m. Stated another way, exceptions can't be combined to trade for a single player.

But exceptions can be used in the same trade (just not combined for a single player).

Let's say that Player A has better skills than Player B so in order to balance the skills levels, Team B has to include Player D (contract value = $1m). Player A can be traded for Player B using the APE and Player D can be traded to Team A for their $1m TE. (Team A also sends a future draft pick which has no trade value). IOW, the overall trade used both the APE and the TE but not on the same player.

Now this is where the plot thickens....

Back when Eddie Griffin was still the property of the Rockets, Jonathan Feigen wrote an article stating that the Rice TE of ~$7.0m could not be combined with Griffins' rookie salary of ~$2.5m to trade for a single player whose contract value was $9.5m or less. This became the basis of many future TE threads and posts. Although the debate still smolders, the last "verdict" was that Feigen's article was incorrect.

    So IMO, Mo Taylor @ ~$8.5m + TE = Tim Thomas @ ~$13m.

If aelliott or NIKE (or hp) has communicated with Coon on this and changed their opinions on whether a TE can be aggregated for a single player, I will easily change mine. But this is my current understanding.

The guy with the 3 reasons hit it on the head.

Thomas blows. He's never really been successful..though his stats have been alright sometimes. He's Van Horn, but a lot crappier in every way, including physically and mentally, and of course skills-wise.

He's a SF. I'd rather have Wesley and TMac than TMac and Thomas.

If we get rid of Taylor, please don't get a nasty contract back. Same complaints.. I'd rather keep Taylor till he gets off the books than get a different version of him.

I agree wholetheartedly that Mo needs to go,but Thomas is an overpaid underachiever. He doesn't even specifically adress our needs at the 4.
    How about Eric Williams?
I'd give up MoTay and a 1 in the deal.

I'm also a Knick fan and I think Tim Thomas is just horrible. In a game this season, he forced 5 shots in the opening 2 minutes and got benched for the rest of the game. Definately not the type of player Houston needs and MoT definately isn't the type of player NY needs.

Thanks, GATER. You're right - I had a momentary brain fart, and confused APE with the trade exception, which apparently is not a term mentioned in the CBA, with the term non-simulaneous trade, etc.

Coon doesn't say in the FAQ that you can't combine the TE with a player in a single trade, which sparked my interest. Thanks for posting the thread - I had forgotten where I saw this before. This came from Feigan. If you're right (which I hope you are), it would greatly increase the odds of being able to dump MoT - either for a better, higher paid player, or a worse, higher paid player (like Tim Thomas), whose deal ends sooner.

I know I'm dreaming, but MoT for Dale Davis (an expiring contract) would be real nice. But perhaps a summer 2006 expiring contract would be a possibility, like MoT plus fodder for Penny Hardaway.

I havent been keeping up, hasnt Penny been pretty torn up with injuries a few years back(knees?)....how is he doing coming back from that...you hardly ever hear about him these days...

IF he was able to fully come back from the injuries...that would be a interestin acquisition....not sure that is exactly what we need...Id be somewhat concerned about the number of shots he would want...
