I like Silas. If the Rockets didn't already have a good coach, I'd want the Rockets to at least interview him for the job.
then, I guess you don't know anything about the other Cleveland tean Fratello coached. That team had Brad Daughlety(sp?), Larry Nance, Mark Price, at their peak, had a wonderful offensive game, and an intimidating defensive inside as well. There was nobody in that Cavs team you mentioned. Fratello was able to design a scheme to slow down the tempo of the game, so they would always have a chance to win. Yes, it's boring, but it's effective with what they had. Remember the Hawks' with Wilkins? Fratello was the coach! He is certaily capable of implement different system based on his personel. I personally think he is the best coach out there for the Rockets. JVG will be a mismatch here. Silas is just Rudy T. No.2. Larry Brown hasn't proved he can coach a dominating big man.

[/QUOTE] I guess you wasn't watching basketball back then because the coach of those teams was the recently fired Lenny Wilkens, not Fratello. When Fratello did have a abundance of talent like he did with the Hawks, he lost to Boston and Detroit. During that time, he had more talent than Detroit, but lost game 6 in the silverdome. He also had the hawks ready to put the Celts away before Cliff Levingston missed a finger roll, so they had to go back to Boston for game 7.
My vote would go to Donnie Nelson, Don Nelson's son. He is one of the bright young minds in the NBA today. He is being wasted up here in Dallas. He can flat out coach as he showed in the Olympics plus he's excellent at coaching the up tempo style of play that the NBA is moving toward. Unlike his father, he also runs a more balanced attack which would be great for Yao.
Donnie is a sharp one. That Olympic game in 00 was close. Plenty of Rudy bashing then, too. I think it was Ray Allen complaining that in the final minutes, the players didn't know who was subbing in, what the game plan was, how many timeouts they had, and what to do about the other team. Sounds familiar. Must admit my many LB was assistant to Tomjanovic on that one, with Tubby Smith and Gene Keady. erf.
ESPN Radio, in Dallas, was just mentioning that Silas is the best coach out there, outside of Phil Jackson, and he would be an IMPACT coach, if he took over the Mavericks next season. They mentioned how good Silas is working with individual player development, and especially underachievers.
Cuban has already hired Silas as a consultant for the playoffs. He starts work tomorrow... I envy the situation in Dallas where the owner will go above & beyond the status quo...
This appears to be more of a goodwill gesture on the part of Don Nelson to his really close friend as he and Silas go way back to their playing days at the Celtics.
My apology! I should have known this better since I was a Bulls fan, watched the Cavs very closely back then. I don't know why I have Fratello stick to my mind as the Cavs coach
I'm still wondering why the Rockets haven't given him an interview? Is ike Dunleavy anymore of a big name than Silas?
Hmm...good question. Maybe they did invite him, but he rejected? Nah...I think he will get an interview...but the day Rudy resigned...they said the top 4 candidates were......Doc Rivers, Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Dunleavy, and Larry Brown. But they haven't interviewed Doc either......but Doc is under contract so unlikely to be our coach....I don't really want him either. Paul Silas. He's a nice guy.....but.........please tell me why he would be good as the Rockets coach.
Because he compares favorably with LB in terms of sheer basketball knowledge and coaching ability. His track record as a coach demonstrates that he knows how to get the most out of his players without alienating them. He is not wound as tight as LB and you'd be able to count on him staying around - unlike LB. His New Orleans team played smart, hard basketball in the playoffs and give Philly everything they had in spite of all the injuries to key stars like Mashburn & Davis. After 4 straight years of watching dumb excuse-filled ball from a group of players ever ready with excuses to cover their underachieving, Silas would be the perfect coach to get these bozos to the next level.
