Why Mavs are so good this year so far?

Quite right (example: New York Kicks)

But... with a good GM, it grants the GM the ability to really stack talent into the team.

For example... the highest paid player on the Mavs payroll is ..... not a Mavs player. It's Michael Finley. The Mavs completely eat the $17 million he'll get paid this year (and $18 mil) next year. And they have Stackhouse playing for $9 million this year. But that's not enough, so they have Dirk at $15 mil, Dampier at $8.7 mil, Terry at $7.5 mil and Croshere at $7.3 mil. When you can throw money around like that, it makes it a LOT easier for a good GM to build a talented team.

No, it doesn't guarantee a great team. But if we gave Carrol Dawson $92 mil to work with, I betcha he'd also be able to build a bad-ass team.

Obviously, I don't care because obviously the Mavs suck. Obviously, their superstar is the most annoying mofo who I can't stand. Obviously, that payroll being 24mil over is ludicrous. Obviously, the Mavs have gotten lucky, and obviously Dirk really really sucks.

Honestly I do believe this. I know he is talented, but he is so ANTICLUTCH. He will get all his points and what not when Mavs have 5-10 point lead. The team is Terry and Josh Howard... Dirk for some reason gets all the credit.

It's not just you. I've seen the replay multiple times, and it really doesn't seem like there's much of any contact at all - not the greatest angle, though. I definitely didn't forsee 6-8 weeks, not until the wheelchair, at least.

They don't get injured because they aren't willing to get into any "unintentional" contact. They stay away when necessary. If they don't want to get a rebound, they forget it and let it go uncontested. Of course, anything can happen on the offensive end, but when you run like them, it's really hard to get any such injury that will make any impact on the season. Remember when Dirk went out with a ankle sprain? Everyone thought it was serious! He ended up playing the next game. He couldn't even walk off the court by himself. Then you see Yao go out like that on his own, and he's out for 8 weeks. Mavs just play smart basketball. They can easily afford to give up a few possessions.

Did you not see last night's game. The Heat were seriously trying to injur Dirk. The funny part was everytime they tried, Dirk always ended up on his feet and the Heat player was always on the floor. Walker got ejected for a flagrant 2 and Dirk did not hit the floor at all. After that incident, Avery had enough and took him out. I really can't stand the Heat.

They have a coach in Avery Johnson who has implemented D. Dirk is a legit superstar who is surrounded with role players that really do their job. Every position has someone that can score. All they needed was a good coach and for Dirk to take charge in Dallas.

I don't like Josh Howard all that much, but I have to agree he's Dirk's batman and he's very underated indeed

    T-Mac & Yao > Dirk & Howard :D

That's the weakest reason. Their highest paid player is Finley, who doesn't even play for them. Their 2 best players Dirk and Howard were acquired by draft.

The #1 reason they are good, is scouting and drafting(you had this at 4). Without Dirk and Howard, Terry and the Mavericks would be back in the lotto.

Well yeah, any team would be bad without 3 of their best players...

As long as they don't get a ring I couldn't honestly care less.

I'm a Rocket fan first and foremost.
    And an anyone-but-Mavs-fan second.

People like to talk a lot about the Mavs improved defense but honestly if you examine their defensive efficiency and opposing eFG% under Nelson and Johnson there's not a whole hell of a lot of difference. (I haven't seen their opposing eFG% this year, not sure if it's any different).

The points allowed go way down because Avery plays at a much slower pace. I think the thing the Mavs might have figured out (and who knows whether or not they figured it out in this way,) is that since they have such a large spread between offensive and defensive efficiency (+8.3), and since, unlike PHX, they can operate just as efficiently out of the half court than in an up-tempo attack, that if they slow the pace down it makes it very difficult for other teams to get enough possessions to match them.

I haven't checked it, but it seems like they've raised their Offensive efficiency. Obviously Dirk has obviously been playing down on the block much more often than he did under Nellie.

When you're willing to say to hell with the cap, it gives you a lot more flexibility when you can just dump a guy like Finley and pay the players you want. You can push the "reset" button quite a bit more often while trying to put a winning team on the floor.

Yup. But they eat Finley's salary and then they supplemented their team With Stackhouse's $9 mil salary, Dampier's $8.7 mil, Terry's $7.5 mil and Croshere's $7.3 mil.

Like I said, when you can throw money around like that, it makes it a LOT easier for a good GM to build a talented team.
