I think you are correct to say that it was a combination of the Nets and Yao just stuggling due to the constant double-teaming.

From my observations seeing the game live at Continental Arena, the Nets did defend Yao well. They often had TWO defenders on him even before Yao had the ball (before the first entry pass). Talk about taking advantage of those "illegal" defenses of the past. The passer usually did look to pass but often with double coverage there they passed it to another man instead. In the 1st quarter, it was Cato because Cato's man left to double team Yao a lot. Also, if you listened to the Nets postgame show, you can tell that Byron Scott was keying against Yao as the number one threat.

However, I do think that Yao was struggling - both in getting good position, and not being able to get free from a man fronting him. Furthermore, his shot just wasn't there for most of the game and seemed to hesitate a bit.

Although, one great thing about having Yao there is that even if he doesn't actually shoot, his mere presence makes the defense collapse on him and thus makes it easier for our perimeter players like Steve, Cuttino and JJ. The Nets players complained of being tired at the end of the 4th quarter partly due to having to run to double team Yao and then scramble to defend the perimeter.

I do think that JVG does run a vast majority of half-court plays for Yao (I would say >80%). It's a pretty big step-up from last season. I don't know why Yao-fans can't see that. JVG is good for both Yao's and Rocket's development. I see really good things with this team in the very near future.

    Just my observations.

Possibly, because unlike you we watch the game and remember what was/wasn't going on, especially with the help of our Game Tapes. Its just like last year but slightly better, Yao Ming is seriously involved for the obligatory period, then the others[you know who] take back the game and do their thing. JVG is a good Coach and he will realise just what is happening.

I love it how Yetti keeps taking shots at JVG and insinuates that JVG is just not as quick to notice things as he is.

We should have hired an international Track and Field coach instead of a proven basketball coach with a .592 winning % and an NBA finals appearance under this belt.

    :p

Still here, Just got up. Thanks for caring about me.

The Francis lovers like you are so pathetic...Don't get too pumped up for your 3 -1 record. Look at who you beat, Denver, Chicago..? LOL. Give me break, stupid. You can't even get a win over the Grizzlies, come on!!

And on the win over the Net? You trailed almost all night long until the last 4 minuts , it's purely luck!!! It has nothing to do with your game plan or your great Francis's leadership which he has NONE! Yao worked so hard to create space, drew double team for the guards, they did nothing to reward the big buy bug keep taking the cheap shots, luckily for them that night..

Everyone outside Houston agreed Francis is a way overrated player. Lakers would like to have Yao or Jackson, or Tayor, but no F** way they'll be interested in Francis or Mobely..

Now I get it why people never pay any respect to the Rockets and why nobody gave a damn to a long time lottery team. It's great deal to do with stupid fans like you.

Again, you are doomed to another failure this season with Francis' reckless play. You have my words.!

I think there are a comination of things that are limiting Yao's shots, but I think the biggest thing is what Feigan wrote in the Chronicle today, about Yao not being agressive enough. Yao has the ability to get a lot better position down low than he has been. He out weighed the guys that were gaurding him by a good 40lbs against the Nets. He seems contempt to go with the turn around jump shot rather than work for better poisition closer to the basket. I do realize this was pretty hard to do in the first half of Tues game, being that he was fronted and then doubled from the back side. They stopped doing this after the first half. I think once he realizes that he is in fact the GO TO MAN, and not some role player, it'll be a different story, but util that moment clicks we will continue to see a bunch of 15-20 pt games from him, which we all know he's more than capable of so much more. This goes for rebounds too. It almost seems like he doesn't want them. Like the ones he gets just happen to fall in his hands. The guy is 7'6'' and only got 10 boards. Steve had that many rebounds. Maybe if the guy gets punched in the face a couple of times, he'll get mad and start dominating some folks, but damn he looks like a wuss out there. GET MAD YAO, and START DEMANDING THE BALL!!!!!

Heh, I really hope yckt doesn't get banned. Board is getting just a little boring with same old people and same old point of view. yckt bring in some extra mean to this board but I won't take him too seriously like so many fans here. By teh way yckt, just state your point and try not to insulting personal to others or else you will really be banned.

Thanks man. My point is and always will be:

Rockets suck because of a couplf of ball hoggers and the way they play today, and they're not going anywhere this season! I tried to enjoy Houston game on national TV, but man, it's painful to watch! Their TV rating is and will be the lowest among NBA league. I rather watch my neighborhood teens playing at the park!

And by the way, Francis is the ugliest PG in NBA!

    See ya!

I'm afraid all these people (including myself) who wish Yao were more dominant are going to be waiting for a long time. Does anyone know if the Chinese media is talking about Yao being too "soft" for the NBA? That should serve as a future warning to Chinese hoops to toughen up, or you'll never get drafted in the NBA. I'm really getting tired of seeing these "cultural differences" being blown up on the big stage because of Yao Ming. At this point I don't know if as of this point he has overall helped break down the stereotypes of asian athletes or reinforced them.

Because he is not being mean enough to establish position in the post...tell him to get in the paint and he'll get to shoot the ball.
