JVG encourages his players to shoot whenever open if it is in range. Yao clearly was in his range but lacked confidence in his shot and passed OR was running a play that needed him to pass around. This is not JVGs fault at all. (I can't believe I just said that)

because he is a terrible player and the Rockets want to be so unhappy here that he leaves the team in disgrace to sign with his favorite coach (who he only played 52 games for) Rudy T

How is Yao the best shooting big man in the NBA? This myth MUST stop.

What are we basing this on? ESPN2k5 or the real action on the court? Are you/we talking about big men 7-5 and up here? Are you talking about shooting from 2 feet from the basket?

How did this legend start in the first place?

like someone implied earlier by saying that yao is ALLOWED to shoot jumpers, you have to understand, that we arent talking about yao NOT BEING ALLOWED TO TAKE A SHOT IF HE IS OPEN. we are talking about not making that apart of his regular game. my argument is that he is to big and powerfull to waiste shooting jumpers with jon barry, and he cant dribble and move at all. part of what makes yao valuable is his ability to draw double teams. with his lack of mobility, if we tried to draw up plays for him to receive the ball while facing the basket, he would never draw a double team again. if you want to incorporate illgauskus type plays into yaos game, why not just trade yao for illgauskus??

If you can hit over 50 percent of his jumpers when left open, why wouldn't we want him to. It would open the lane for Tmac and others.

    My point exactly.

    Dirk Nowitzki
    Brad Miller
    Carlos Boozer
    Pau

Are just some of the big men in the NBA that can shoot better than Yao from virtually any where on the court other than 2 feet away.

I dont know if Yao's told not to shoot outside shots and I actually prefer he take it strong to the hoop. However, his outside shot seems to be crappier this year and I wonder why he lost his touch. I remember the last 2 years thinking that Yao getting the ball within 15 feet was almost automatic.

ray allen doesnt shoot 50%, and ray allen is perhaps the best shooter in the league. how can yao?? there is a difference between a 18 foot jump shot and a 5' baby hook.

He will take those wide open 18' or 20' in the game against Shaq.

Except that if Yao shot more jumpers the other team's big men might be drawn out more to defend him and open up passing and driving lanes.

Look at the success Sabonis had hitting outside shots until a big guy came out to defend him and then he started throwing passes to guys cutting to the hoop.

Yao is not hitting jumpers because if he misses, our PF's will not be able to grab the offensive rebound...

Every 15-footer Yao shoots takes him one step closer to Rik Smits territory. He's a 7'6" center -- and a damn good one. He shouldn't be playing 15 feet from the basket; it takes him out of rebounding position, removes a viable low-post threat from the Rockets offense and neutralizes his significant advantage -- height.

Yao will never be able to post up in half of the possessions. Nobody in the NBA can. In the other possessions when he isn't posting up, he's free to be Rik Smits.

Would JVG chew out the other players when they pass the open shot? If so, did he do it with Yao? JVG never tried to utilize Yao's face up game, it doesn't surprise me if he discourage Yao from playing outside.

Allen's below-50% only tells you not all of his shots are open. Yao's previous soft touch from 15-18 ft shots are usually wide open because most centers won't guard 3 pts line and small players can't even challenge, otherwise they will pay for yao's (previous) creative passes.

Sometimes, I think JVG is way too conservative and even one dimentional. Yao has only low-post game now, and TMac seldom drives to the hoop.

Do you mean the same significant advantage of height that could be utilitized in passing from the top of the key..?

You can't expect to have both...a banger down low with a shooting touch like Yao used to have. I think everyone has wanted him to become more of an inside presense which has really lowered the quality of his outside shooting touch.

I guess it's another way JVG is changing how he plays.
