I remember back in high school my english teacher would pronounce my friend's last name nugent as in ted nugent instead of nguyen.

west Philadelphia born and raised On the playground was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school Nguyen a couple of guys who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I think it's Chang or Muhommed. And if anyone cares, Nguyen is the most common Vietnamese last name, due to merger of several last names (ex: Ly and Trinh). Ly and Trinh are still around, but not many.
I know you're joking, but for giggles I looked it up. Lin is only ranked 19th most common surname in China and 2nd in Taiwan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames_in_Asia According to the same source, Nguyen is the most common surname in Vietnam by a LARGE margin...38.4% of the population.
