    Why are we attacking Muslims?
"The terrorists" and "the anti-terrorists" are locked in a vicious cycle of self-righteousness and other-blaming.

Damn, seriously - why is it so hard for you Islam haters to understand? I am by no means an advocate of political correctness nor Islam and I think the religion fundamentally has a lot of teachings that are messed up but religion throughout human history has had its nutjobs in power and groups that abuse its power, led by motifs of fear and hate rather than the benevolence and good they teach, Judaeo-Christianity included. The Middle East in many areas is in third world circumstances with an uneducated populace. GOP supporters, what's your excuse?

Here's a recent commercial by one of the largest Telecom companies in the Middle East. When's the last time I saw the right wing nut jobs on this board talk about fighting with compassion and understanding? We should be talking about working together and fighting on the same side, not with the rhetoric that Islam as a whole is downright bad.

The real tragedy of all this in the US? Politics and media have taken the rhetoric of fear and anger and used it with the mentally weak in the US for their own profit. Negativity, fear, and anger drives right wing media ratings. Right wing politicians constantly get their supporters angry and back jingoist policies so they can get reelected. And right supporters? Fell right for it. In many cases, it's not their fault. Brought up in a circumstance that's more closed minded and they just don't know better.

Serious question - do you GOP supporters even realize the parallels between radical Islamic groups and the GOP right now? Lead the ignorant by rhetoric of fear and hate for their own gain. Lead the ignorant by rhetoric of fear and hate for their own gain. Lead the ignorant by rhetoric of fear and hate for their own gain.

It's one of the most true statements of the condition of mankind. Countless charismatic world leaders have used war, the fear of the outsider to deflect blame from the constituents off them and towards the 'other'. It frees them up to be more domestically 'free' in expressing their power and authority with out opposition.

You are making the mistake of lumping everyone in the same group and thinking that they are all motivated by the same thing. "Terrorists" and "anti-terrorists" are not all the same, and, just as importantly, not all "terrorists" are the same either. There are some terrorists, even some that outwardly present themselves as jihadis, who have primarily secular political concerns. But don't assume that applies to ISIS.

Totally agree with this. It was one thing when the terrorists were trying to drive western influence from propping up regimes they opposed, but that is not what Isis is trying to do.

The left is weak and pathetic for standing up for the founding principle of the United States of America. People like RL want to change the USA into their fascist effing uthopia where White people are on top. F them.

The toughest guy on Islam that I have heard is Sam Harris, and he seems to lean left. (He understands science and all that nonsense)

Pretty much. They will never win though. The world will move on without him and people like him.

Terrorists will not not win either.

Eventually oil will become so cheap they will run out of financing. At some point the normal non bat sh^t crazy Muslims will get tired of the violence.

I don't venture much into the d&d cause this forum is a cycle of stupidity...on most topics. My two cents on this is that in a few years (10 years) when oil becomes way more irrelevant and the Middle East starts burning this terrorist insanity will become a distant memory. Foreign powers will not care less about Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Saudi. There is nothing you can say to justify violence against innocent people, it's at its core inhumane. However, these terrorist do it exactly for that reason to create divide. Sadly as there are idiots who kill there are idiots who hate. Eventually that hate is used and manifests to violence. Carry on folks.

Trying to understand ones "enemy" is a natural step. People on the right have painted a certain picture ; people on the left also created a caricature.

In both cases , both sides generalize Arabs and Muslims in an effort to explain things.

Is religion being used to manipulate the people that terrorize us? Yes . What percentage of influence does this have ? What is the net effect of the religion in a particular region ? What are the answers to these questions for all religions ? What about in other time periods ?

No mistake at all. That's what I was saying: it's misguided to go after Muslims. They're not all the same.

OK. Then I don't see the relevance to what I was talking about (ISIS, and their motivation).

Because Brando 2101 said something to the effect of "Why does everyone think ISIS is a religious organization? They are political." And you responded something to the effect of, "Then why are they attacking Shi'ites and Coptic Christians?" which to me implied that you did think they were a religious organization. To which I replied, "Why are we attacking Muslims?" the point being, "Why are we doing what ISIS is doing?"

Lou is the most racially driven person on this forum. He is obsessed with race and incapable of looking at anything in the colorblind way we need to get past racism. As long as people like him fan the flames of racism, it will always be an issue.
