I don't know guys. During the Clippers game and during the 2nd quarter of this game, people were moving the ball around and getting open shots for people. Scola is getting open shots at the baseline and hitting, Landry is getting the ball at the FT line for the shot or the drive and dunk. We're getting to the line and making the FTs. Artest is getting wide open 3s from other players attacking the basket.

The only problem is that Yao, Tmac and Artest have yet to have a game where they are all hitting their shots. That has nothing to do with Adelman's offense. When Tmac/Artest/Yao post up, they should be able to get a shot or a double team that leads to an open shot.

It's not practical for us to transplant the kings' "ADELMAN" systerm onto our team, because HOU is HOU is HOU but sac is sac is sac which sucks now. For the first piece, we don't have an as smart PG as bibi. and scola is not as alround as webber of his prime. our swing men are pretty good but the swing men don't play important roles in ADEL's systerm. In the former kings, Adelman used cristeeeee and peja as his starting swing men.

Even if we could be just the same as the former kings, is that enough for us to win the title? Adelman didn't do that with his kings and he isn't easily be able to that with rockets, and today's wester conference is tougher than it was. so... ... fire him.

Does anyone know exactly what the "Adelman system" is? I see a lot of people saying the Rockets aren't buying into the system (which may very well be true), and that we'll never be like the Kings because we suck, etc. I think that's kind of the point? Rick Adelman is not trying to recreate the Kings in Houston. But, I am not completely sure what he is trying to do.

I'd really like to see Scola setting the high screens and letting McGrady get in the 12-14ft range to hit those jumpers like Kobe was doing. We know he can hit those when he goes iso and drives in, so maybe giving him some help will free up other people (Artest on the weak side, Yao on the strong side, Scola rolling. . Rafer can run back on defense because we know he is gonna miss).

I think our lack of movement has to be on McGrady, he doesn't seem to be moving without the ball at all. Plus, his trotting up the court has been annoying me for as long as I can remember. You don't see Kobe walking up the court (and if you do he's trailing the play to get an easy jumper). Also, Artest is very, very good at setting screens, I'd like to see him do that more often so he can get the better of some smaller players.

The big 3 haven't had 10 games together, yet, so I might be overreacting that Adelman doesn't have a defined system. But, you know, Adelman is pretty damn successful wherever he goes (no rings, but he's been close), so, we should keep the faith, at least through this bad stretch.

basically the offense is all about reading cuts and alot of motion. Adelamsn offense in my opinion, doesn't run for just 1 player, which is why Tmac at times and as well as Yao, struggle in the offense. This is a problem with the team as well. When tmac and yao hold the ball, the offense is really stagnant, and they aren't cutting and setting screens for one another. The reason why Adelmans offense worked so well for the kings is because they didn't have superstar players in that side, they just had a group of really efficient players instead.
Even though Luther Head sucks ASS, i think he's the only one that grasps Adelmans system well. To me, he, and to some extent scola, are the only 2 that read the cuts well and this is vital in order to master Adelman's offense.

having said that, in the 22 game winning streak, we did see alot of the offense go into action, so there is still hope for this years rockets. It's seriously only been 7 games and peopel are sayin gits taken them too long to figure out his offense? give it some time; the players wil lget it.

well i think that its our big 3 that arent playing well together..if you watch the 2nd unit they play very well and efficient together using ricks offense..with tmac yao and ron its all 1 on 1 and isolations..Bill W. and Matt B. said it before the game as well that the 2nd unit is more effective because they have been practicing it since training camp and w/ more reps make it more easier for them unlike our big 3 who havent played w/ eachother a significant amount of time..besides that....i dnt knw wats up w the guys having trouble executing the offense..im just as puzzled as you are dude.

Here's the main reason: Because of preseason injuries, etc, our starting lineup has played together in game situations for less than 4 hours total.

When you're trying to run an offense that requires reading the defense and your teammates simultaneously, you need to develop a lot of trust and familiarity.

Of course, people (T-mac) do need to move more, other people (Yao) need to not send their passes by western union, some people (rafer) need to hit open jumpers, and others (ron) need to move the ball instead of dribbling 1 on 3. Aside from Rafer's J, these are all things that framiliarity and a clearly defined offensive role will solve.

    Anyone?

I know that the Princeton offense relies heavily on passing and hard cuts to eventually cause mismatches and exploit them. The Adelman offense is a variation of this but I have no idea to what extent.

I don't think that he is trying to turn the Rockets into a new version Kings team because we simply don't have the type of players. IMO, he is just letting the team get into the habit of a 'read and react' type of offense without calling individual plays.

I think that's where the problem is. You have guys like T Mac and Artest who aren't effective off of the ball and is the reason why the offense seems so stagnant and eventually breaks down into a bunch of iso plays. What I want to know is why can't Adelman get these guys to move off of the ball. The offense is designed to get easy baskets so I don't see why the players would be so relunctant to adopt it.

Our stars get by on raw talent alone. They just can't run it well.

Every other possession they spend 15 seconds of the shot clock just trying to get into position and get the ball to Yao, by that time either they turn it over trying to force it in or have to revert to iso-play to get a shot off.

They should just stick to normal PnR, post ups, etc. Thing is, when they are off, it's just bad. You'd think with 3 guys, you can deal with 1 being off. But when 2 of the 3 are off nightly, that's tough. I'm still in the "give it time" camp though.

I definitely don't, but my best understanding (and general one) is where the ball actually comes up top with the C or PF freeing up the paint for everyone else to run around screens, cut to the basket, etc.

It seems to be an offense that takes what the D gives you, and/or capitalizes on opportunities, miscommunications on defense, etc.

The Rockets actually played their best basketball last season--the 22 game win streak--running the offense. Then they totally regressed for the playoff series with Utah. What's driving me crazy is that I was expecting they'd pick up where they left off after the win streak in terms of their mastery of the offense. Instead the offense still looks horrible.

Adelman's not running a pure Princeton style offense with the Rockets, and in fact you'll probably never see a pure Princeton offense in the NBA. From what I understand from media reports he's always been intent on installing a hybrid offense with the Rockets. There was a pretty good thread in the GARM about motion offenses last season. Bottom line they depend on spacing, passing the ball and hard cuts.

He's not trying to replicate the Kings, but he is trying to institute motion, screens, cutting, etc. into the offense.

You may think you'd really like to see that, but you wouldn't. McGrady isn't a good shooter. I don't want him taking many mid-range jumpers.

    We do?

Just make your stars understand that if other players are shooting better (Scola, Landry, Brooks) there is no need for you too jack up 15 or 16 shoots to only make 3 or 4, we all know, and so does the nba, what they are about, they should start playing to win, and not to win it by themselves.

The offense goes stagnant when we play for the big 3, when the shots are being taken by other players we are getting better results.

Our astonishing big 3 is shooting a magnificent 0.386, while our scrubs are shooting .411 and 5f we go by our 3 best scrubs (scola, landry and brooks) they are shooting over 50% (.506) so let´s tell our stars to play for the team for god´s sake. (that may mean many things but above all, sacrifice your stats, your way of playing and your ego)

Yeah, that's really frustrating. You would think that after going on the second longest winning streak in NBA history that they'd never want to abandon Adelman's offense.

From what I see there aren't nearly enough hard cuts and passes. Way to many iso's.

What's starting to bother me is this: Does it look like they're incapable of running the offense?

Or does it look like they're not even trying?

I would just like to get a sense that anything they are doing on offense is deliberate.

    FUNDAMENTALS my dear boy.......FUNDAMENTALS!

or a lack there of.....

The second unit runs the offense so well because they have bought into it and nobody on that unit is a quote "super star" unquote. Superstars go one-on-one so they need the ball in their hands to be effective. Second unit guys pass the ball to get open shots.......BRILLIANT!

I think they need to go here...

It is so hard because certain players are resisting moving without the ball.

Some players have been stars their whole lives and have something they are comfortable doing.

They are resisting trying something else.

And, it is hurting the team.

Maybe some players need to be benched and forced to watch game footage from the 22 game win streak.

The usual coaching meglomania... "I want to run this system!" Rather than running a system that maximizing the abilities of the players on your roster. RA can keep tryin to shove the square peg into the round hole - or he can utilize the immense talent at his disposal by playing to his teams strengths.

Additionally, having a PG that can't shoot a wide open jumper doesn't help. ;)

    1) The closest this team every came to truly implementing the offense they went on a 22 game winning streak.

    2) Regardless of whether or not it's a good idea, the players have to follow the coach's lead as long as he's the coach. Any player that out and out refuses to follow orders is a cancer.
