I've been saying this for a long time. The GOP is in the hands of a group of interests that have followed policies far removed from the Republican Party of Everett Dirksen or even Ronald Reagan. They are not conservative in the traditional sense at all and have been a serious disaster for this country, IMO. Only by "destroying itself" at the polls can a new leadership emerge in the GOP, one that I still won't agree with on a heck of a lot of issues, but could at least have respect for.

    Impeach Bush/Cheney.

    Informative thread.

I care very little about politics at this juncture in my life, because so few seem to say anything I find to truthful and removed of personal bias, but I would read this forum more often if people had more intelligent discourse like presented here (with the notable exception of the caricatures)

Correct me if I'm remembering wrong, but aren't you a big Ron Paul/Libertarian supporter of economic totalitarianism and the resultant inevitable corporate rule?

well that makes me happy to hear. there is so much mud-slinging and brinkmenship here (and to be sure I have been a part of that in the past) that i myself was skeptical of this approach - but what you write seems to affirm it's the right way to go.

i think if some of us here elevate the level of discourse - and i'd say the intelligence level and knowledge is definitely here to do that - we could actually have a place that really creates some interesting debate.

I think there's too few conservatives on this board - but there are a few who do post that i respect a great deal, weslinder coming immediately to mind.

if basso and trader jorge, and roxran could drop the -- i don't know what to call it - but whatever it is, if they could just debate a bit more dispassionately and without the sarcasm and negativity - i think it would be more productive for their own goals as well.

I agree. I think part of the Jorge, basso, et all approach is they feel some need to compensate for the general lack of a conservative voice of reason in here. While I consider myself a conservative in traditional matters (which go along with my religion) I am becoming increasingly open minded on a lot of social and economic matters.

I try to stay away from heated arguments because I have been known to lose my cool very quickly, but I'm trying a new approach in which I examine all sides of the story.

I've long hated reading threads in this forum because 95% of them seemed to be 50 liberals vs Jorge in a **** slinging match.

I admit I am in the minority in this forum, but I don't think there is any reason to be discourteous to the posters in here (a few whom I have had the pleasure of meeting) based on simple matters of opinion.

I am not a libertarian and I think very highly of Ron Paul, I can't say I would agree with him on every issue but I am presently convinced he is the most honest politician in Washington and he is the only politician I trust to say what he means, and actually stick to his commitments without wavering.

I would agree with Dr. Paul concerning the central bank, the federal debt, foreign policy and civil liberties.

I think politically I lean toward being a fanatical Christian, which for me means being a part of the solution in the area in which I live, loving my neighbor and my savior.

I really don't mind if President Obama wins or loses.

Most of my time is spent trying to help someone up from where I've been.

Until they start trying to stop my preaching or telling me what I can say and what I can't say ; I think I'll be just fine. :)

Well, after that considered, polite response I feel bad about taking that cheap shot.

    My apologies.

I do not hold Ron Paul in the same high esteem and let that color my comment.

If Jorge gave up his Rovian tactics in trying to do whatever it is he is trying to do, and instead just debated facts in a classy and logical way - without the taunting, baiting, agitation, and such - i certainly would engage and discuss with him in a serious way. I think he's actually very smart - but I understand his game too. He takes pleasure in provoking reactions - like a cat playing with the mouse without realizing that he's a mouse too. In fact, this is what I realized I had become as NewYorker.

One of the reasons I support Obama is his performance at the Competitiveness Summitt he had at Carnegie Melon in early July. I watched the whole thing and it was amazing how well he understood the nature of some of the problems that the country is facing right now. He had a panel with CEO's from different companies including General Motors and I think the President of MIT and others. You can probably catch it on YouTube. The guy gets it. Lapel pins and God Bless Americas are great but we have serious problems that need to be addressed and it needs to happen right now.

No problem, I don't have a gripe with most posts and I have had my share of reactions, and gaffs and I probably posted at some point that Ron Paul invented the internet and was a good friend of Mother Teresa. :D
