Even though we are trading away the core of our team, we have a lot of young talent to back up Scola, Martin, and Dragic. We are overstocked at PF, SG and PG, but woefully understocked at C. We need a center badly. The Rockets have always been strong at center. Hayes plays good D and we will miss him, but he cannot rebound or score.

It might seem like we are overpaying for Pau, but I would argue that we are underpaying. Think about how highly Pau would be valued on the market if he were a free agent this year. The brilliant part about this trade is that we aren't even paying for him with money, but with players. We have an abundance of players. This trade will not affect our depth chart as much as you might think:

    New Depth Chart
    PG: Lowry-Flynn
    SG: Lee-Williams-Taylor
    SF: Budinger-Morris
    PF: Patterson-Hill-Parsons
    C: Gasol-Thabeet

    Old Depth Chart
    PG: Lowry-Dragic-Flynn
    SG: Martin-Lee-Taylor
    SF: Budinger-Williams-Morris
    PF: Scola-Patterson-Parsons
    C: Hayes-Thabeet-Hill

Also, don't forget that this trade will reduce our cap space, freeing up even more cash to spend on overpriced free agents. If we grab a free agent, our depth chart will improve.

Lastly, this trade works well on the back end. Pau will not be under contract for very long, so we can probably trade him for another set of good players if the Rockets decide not to keep him.

it's suck. you know, with the roster that without KM and scola you hope, it seems never to become a offseason team. last season, KM&Scola are getting most of the score in the team. we can't lose the spine like this.

The worse thing about it to me is what it will do for the Lakers.

I think it makes them worse unless they get Dwight.....but it does give them another superstar to retool around like when they shipped Shaq out and rebuilt around Kobe.

The trade will not be the last for the Rockets. Gasol will most likely start at PF and backup the center. I think Budinger moves to SG instead of Williams.

Yeah if Bynum gets injured again then they are screwed.

He's suspended for the first five games, so their frontcourt will look very interesting if they don't trade for Dwight by the time the season starts.

This situation is nothing like the that one.

You want to build around CP3? He's gonna be Brandon Roy in a couple of years.

Another thing, we do this trade and land Nene, it almost assuradly means Dwight is a Net.

Dwight will not be a Laker, I repeat, Dwight will not be a Laker.

His first choice is the Brooklyn Nets to play along with Deron Williams.

Didn't Hollinger basically say that Lakers have no chance at Dwight if they make the deal anyways?

They don't have the necessary pieces to trade for Dwight, and Dwight is aiming for New Jersey.

Losing Odom and Gasol for Paul puts a huge dent on their frontcourt. Considering how fragile Bynum is, if he goes down the Lakers would get smothered on the boards.

isn't this really spanoulis and landry for gasol? If I told you that we could parlay the spanoulis and landry move into gasol everyone would be hailing morey. Just because scola turned out to be much better than expected doesnt diminish the roots of where we get gasol.

I'm warming up to this trade and the idea that we are gaining height and an overall good player in gasol.

We lost some heart and war feelings with hayes and scola but at the end of the day hayes was an offense liability and scola was a defensive liability... and hayes and scola were my favorites..

Martin is not built for the playoffs and wouldnt get to the line as much postseason and stinks defensively. I'm just not a fan of the slow the game and lose momentum at the free throw line game he has.

So as much as I like martin and scola, seems like we gained some height inside and some good offense as well.. and all for spanoulis and landry? sign me up !

I also think 2 balls hog on the strong side with a frail bynum on the inside is not so scary...so I'm not so concerned with us 'helping the lakers' as much as I am the NBA continuing to gift the lakers early in the season every year with a nice set of home games (this year is no different with 11 of first 15 games for LA at home) I think kobe is getting old fast and they better hope they get howard. Everyone on the radio here in southern california thinks that howard is as good a laker and if so then yeah a cp3,kobe,howard team would be somehthing, but people forget what odom and gasol have done for LA.

Unless Morey gets in there to help "facilitate" a D.Howard to NJ trade ;)

I think one of the things a move like this does that kind of goes unnoticed (other than the cap space) is it gives us the opportunity to trade one of our 500,000 "young prospects" for another Kevin Martin-esque type of player. Off the top of my head I can think of a few teams that might be able to trade a guy for picks/prospects (any by "top of my head" I mean I googled it):

    Corey Maggette
    Ben Gordon
    Danny Granger
    OJ Mayo
    Stephen Jackson

There are a few other "lesser" wingman types. And in theory we could go after guys like Wes Matthews from the Trailblazers but other than just to clear space they really don't have reasons to trade guys like that. But someone like OJ Mayo if you give them cheap depth in return could potentially be obtainable where we would never have thought of a deal like that with Kevin Martin on the team. The resultant team wouldn't be a contender by far... but if we start making moves like that and have like a 45-50 win team with Gasol making the All-star team, suddenly you could see us as a potential suitor for a guy like Deron Williams next year if he wants to leave.

I liked the ORIGINAL Pau trade. I liked the ORIGINAL "timing" of the Pau trade.

Now? I just have the urge to punch David Stern in the face.

You have said alot of dumb things the last few days. Paul doesnt have the chronic bad knees like roy had since high school. CP3 is a superstar who led his team to the playoffs despite injuries, trades and whatever else. Kobe still has 3-4 more good years t a high level. Paul and Kobe can recruit players to join forces. Again, no matter how you look at it, the lakers are getting the better, younger player and cap space.

What's that thing people normally say right about now?

    Totally thread worthy.

    Cool story bro.

    Lock.

    Rookify.

    Ban.

    In before the lock.

Couldn't this be in any of the other dozens of threads discussing this trade?

    Whew. I'm spent.

Where are points going to come from?

Lowry is a horrible perimeter shooter.
Lee is a horrible perimeter shooter.
    Buddinger is streaky at best.
    Patterson unproven.
Gasol has proven he cannot carry a team. He's 2nd fiddle at best.

Sorry, I don't buy it. Even if we somehow land another big man. Nene or Dalembert are NOT big offensive threats.

I don't know what Morey is trying to accomplish with this trade.

No because the value matured these past 5 years. It's Spanoulis>Scola+5 years and Landry+4years>Kevin Martin for Gasol.
