Honestly if you were Thibs, would you take a job with the Rockets right now? You'd forfeit your paycheck from Chicago and go to a team where a bunch of non-effort giving players just forced management to fire its last coach. You just got fired from an organization where you didn't see eye-to-eye with management while Morey is probably the most hands-on GM in terms of offensive schemes throughout the league.

You're basically immediately expected to transform the team back into a contender and turn Harden into a capable defender. If everything does work out, you'll get swept by GS anyways in the 2nd round.

There is literally no upside and 99% chance of butting heads with management and/or players.

I can see why a new head coach wouldn't want to come to a team in mid-season IF the expectations were an immediate turnaround with a playoff appearance. However, if the owner and GM assume that the season is already lost (which they should), then bringing in a coach (if you could get him) at the midseason point to evaluate the players and system, and see if there's anything that can be done to start a reversal of mediocrity before season's end...well, that doesn't seem like such a bad deal.

My concern is that without showing improvement in a new direction by the end of the season, it's going to become impossible to attract both new talented players OR a new coach. No one's going to want to come over here when we're still on a downswing. I feel like promising J.B. the job until the end of the year may lead to us missing a critical window of opportunity that will curse us for years.

Thibodeau seems like the obvious choice considering how much Harden's defense improved after he played with him two summers ago. If Thibs or any other coaches aren't on the serious table, though, just because they don't fit "the system," then settle in for another decade or more of mediocrity. More than ANYTHING ELSE, we should be looking to get the best coach possible, whether it's Thibodeau or not, and letting that coach use the GM as a tool to build a team.
