Non-violent Civil Right Leader who was assassinated.

That does not describe Malcom X. There are plenty of other civil rights leaders that don't have real holidays, but I don't think its a big deal. I guess you could have a Civil Rights Day rather than MLK Day.

I disagree somewhat. First, MLK wasn't as vain as Jackson. Yes, he had his personal failings, but he did not seem as image conscious as Jackson. Furthermore, if MLK had not been assassinated, there would have never been the vacuum in leadership that Jackson was able to exploit (not to mention the photos of him on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel and the link this gave him to King's legacy). I don't see MLK ever embarking an a Presidential run... instead, he would do everything possible to politically influence the people in the race by organizing voters.

He was definitely a radical, speaking out against the Vietnam War and tackling economic justice in his later years. If he had lived, those two stances would have placed him in direct opposition to some very powerful forces in our society who would have done everything possible to marginalize him.

My own suspicion is that MLK would have ended up like Tecumseh... trying in vain to unite different but easily dividable groups in opposition to an overwhelming force. One interesting thing about the trajectory of his life is that he kept increasing the circle of people he was concerned about and I also think he would have gradually expanded that interest to include poverty and discrimination on the world stage. So, maybe he ends up failing to secure the changes he wanted in America and focuses on world injustices.

Of course, he didn't live, so any speculation as to how his life would have turned out is worth a bucket of warm spit. I do know that he had the ability and the talent to influence history and give voice to those people who needed one, and I suspect he would have continued to make a difference somehow.

Most places that give MLK Day off (including my job) give their employees the opportunity to trade it for Chavez day, Good Friday, or another religious holiday of their choosing.

Of course it would. All Liberals agree we definitely need a special day where we watch Kobe play because we don't get enough of that throughout the year.

No, but the USA does have a holiday in honor of Christopher Columbus and he did much worse things in his life than gamble and burglarize homes.

However, Christmas would be moved to either April or May to more accurately reflect Jesus historical birth month.

Say, that's a good idea. There would be a definite Liberal appeal to having Christmas be on April 15. On second thought, nah. Liberals like un-Christian Christmas carols like Let it Snow and Jingle Bell Rock and those songs just wouldn't sound right in April or May.

White, whiny Christians. Ridiculous. Except they are really hurting due to the economic-corporate policies espoused on Fox and by libertarian/conservative ideology. If would be easier to feel sorry for them if they didn't blame other victims and understood how their ideology has fooled them into whining about the wrong people.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Christian. Malcolm X was a Muslim. Who do you think they're going to give a holiday to?

Now kids, who do socialist/liberals hate?

White Christians! (Black Christians are ok but they might not agree with homosexual behavior, Mexican Christians might be cool but look out, they probably are Catholic and are against abortion. Gay white Christians are acceptable.)

Quit whining. Quit being the victim. Take personal responsibility.

Or is that just for others?

Your inability to be grammatical when calling others stupid is pretty funny.
