All these ref problems will be solved by 3 things: 1. NBA needs new superstar tandem for marketing. Calling fouls when Yao and McGrady do their trademark moves doesn't help. 2. Yao needs to make his movements more elegant, like McGrady's. I hate to say it, but this is all aesthetics. When you move (or poke at the ball, or use your hands on defense) as smoothly as T-Mac does, they don't call a foul because it's just too damned impressive. 3. Yao needs to develop a clear pattern of "see, I'm not fouling" gestures so the refs get used to not calling him. Lately he has refined that thing where he pulls his elbows back as if to say, "see, I'm not reaching in." When the refs see that stuff, it makes them pause before blowing the whistle, and they wonder whether to give you the benefit of the doubt, and by then it's too late for them to blow the whistle without looking like a late call.
So the onus on Yao when someone drives straight into him is to side-step like a ninja and try to get the block from an angle while totally avoiding body contact? geez
Screw the freaking refs! I'm so tired of their collective sorry asses, they take the fun out of basketball!
Ya when you still get rookie calls against even a scrub's scrub like Keith Van Horn, you get to thinking that Stern and his pack of zebras must actually believe Dampier really is the 2nd best center in the L
Because Yao CAN'T JUMP. His vertical sucks and he's not agile enough to be in the right body position to get a good block. When he does try to block, he gets dunked on like 90% of the time or he gets called for the foul. All that's left for him to is be a 7'5" obstruction by standing there and putting his hands up. As long as he's not in the direct path between him and the basket, he'll get called for the foul instead of the charge. The guy needs to have more agile feet or just better footwork to be effective.
Yao is trying his best to adapt his game to meet referees standards- however subjective they may be. He never gets the judgement calls -I think because his size is so imposing. Look at Nowitski- he gets every call when he is taking his shot if there is minimal contact or no contact at all. It is ridiculous. In the 4 Q of the 3rd game - he was called for a foul-I really could not believe the referees even called a foul on him - even though the contact was apparent. Look at Shaq- he can live in the paint- he seldom gets the 3 second call. Shaq makes physical contact on nearly every play - look how big he is and how much space his body occupies- he seldom gets called for fouls. Yao may be clumsy, but he does not get called fairly. Yao is a gentleman among heathens........-the refs
Well once he learns how to defend properly when people attack him..like if he can in time..get position to draw charge outside of circle..or let person come in and block the shot...then it'll be better.. He can still improve. Just needs mentoring, guidance, quick learning, practice....and yeah it'd be nice if adjusted quickly
someone should compile a video of all the ticky tack fouls that YAO get and do a side by side video of Shaq or any other centers doing the exact same move and not getting called for a foul. Then call racism (whether real or not, but the media loves to pay attention to it) on the nba so the national media will listen.
It's a great idea. The blatant calls against Yao and no call against Yao's defenders are getting insane. LegendZ, you probably the video guru to do that.
The real question isn't "Why does Yao try to take charges?" The realy question is "Why doesn't Yao try to take charge?"
Only one thing needs to happen -- China needs to ban the broadcast of all Rockets games in China for "'portraying their national treasure in a negative light," a la Lebron's Nike commercial until the ref problems against Yao are fixed.
