Oooooo, I like this scenario! :) ... Next, HP meets its aspire numbers, I get my variable pay bonus, and then I promptly turn around and spend that money on other goods and services, thereby stimulating the economy further.

I've found much of this thread interesting reading, even if some of what I've read is appalling. I'm going to tell everyone something, and if this place is still around a few years from now, and I''m still around a few years from now, folks can tell me if I am wrong or if I am right. Texas is slowly moving to the center/left from the right/center, and will be, eventually, in the Democratic column, absent something castastrophic, like several years of a disastrous Obama administration, which I don't see happening. This is a trend not only in Texas, but in other states identified as "Red" in the South and Southwest (where Texas is, folks).

Tom DeLay's raping of the will of the people, otherwise known as redistricting outside the normal cycle for such things, was done primarily to rid Texas of White conservative/progressive Democratic Congressmen, representatives well liked by their largely Republican districts and reelected time and again, by those Republican dominated districts, before DeLay's b*stard creation. Before the will of the voters was tossed into a dumpster by DeLay, Craddick and company, those congressmen were good examples of Democrats winning despite running in districts seen as GOP and conservative. While all but one of them is gone, the example is a good one and one we will increasingly see here. Democrats have a good chance of capturing the Texas House. If Kinky hadn't run as a 3rd party candidate, we might already have a Democratic Governor.

The trend is there, for folks who wish to open their eyes. This isn't some inherently "Red Conservative State." The fundamentals underpinning GOP rule here are shifting and beginning to go against that party and towards the Democrats. Perry, Craddick, and our hapless Lt. Governor have done so many things to the people of this state, told so many lies, lined so many pockets of big corporations, foreign and domestic, at the expense of the people of Texas, that finally it is sinking in that we've been shafted, badly, by the Republican Party.

Just wait and see. We aren't as conservative, or as Republican, as a lot of Texans believe. I remember when Texas was largely Democratic. It will be again.

This is a more illustrative McCain '08 theme than "Country First."

Don't you know that HP is an evil corporation. Its not like they employ about 175,000 people worldwide or anything.

#1 you dont know what socialism is. a $700 billion bailout is the closest thing we've seen to socialism in the last few months
#2...the MAJORITY of AMERICA is poor and middle class. 1% of american has 99% of the wealth....
#3 life is MORE than about how much you pay the government. i know nobody likes taxes, but taxes are a good thing. as a society we need them. i know youve never been broke in your life. you've never been on food stamps it's hard. those people should not be paying the same rate as the CEO of exxon. the CEO should not get a tax break through a bunch of loopholes while the little guy doesnt...

#4....you have to lower the taxes on If you wanna get outta this mess, we have to raise taxes. simple as that. we cant even pay for this war. we've spent BILLIONS of BORROWED money on two wars (while iraq sits on their surplus)...

While there is certainly a disparity in wealth, it's not ever close to "1% has 99% of the wealth". Do you have a link for this? I have seen stats showing 10% have over 57%, 1% has 35+%, 20% have 90%, but never 1% has 99%.

I have seen other stats where the top 5% of taxpayers pay 60% of the taxes.

Obama never really invested ad time or huge amounts of campaign resources. He could have probably turned some of that around, but why? His electoral path never included Texas, and while he did throw some ground resources to build the party, it was never a go-to state. With good long-term investments, solid governing, an appropriate push, and another 4-8 years of demographic changes, TX will be competitive.

Yeah; note that, though around ten points higher than the national average, two-thirds still dislike the current administration. 89% say we're in worse shape than last year. So the Texans polled are capable of acknowledging reality.

I would think these numbers would suggest a willingness to oust the incumbent president's party, vote for small "c" change, but that 23%/45% just sort of sticks in the craw.

Good point, rimrocker, though he had a decent team set up for the Texas caucuses that helped him beat Clinton. He still has volunteer sites all over the state, and Toyota Center was packed when he came through. I read somewhere he recently put up some ads in Dallas, just because he could, but yeah, he otherwise hasn't advertised much since the primacaucus.

To that extent, though, McCain hasn't to my knowledge spent a dime in Texas, and nobody mistakes him for a Zoroastrian.
