Problem #1 is our half-court offense. And Battier won't help much, if at all, in that regard.

As a fan of this team, I really hope a healthy Battier can play his excellent defense on the court, and I miss him much more with the bad performance of our so called Big 3 recently. But I must admit I don't know whether his coming back can fix the problem right now, the problem of our Big 3.

Yao and Tmac are in bad conditions, body and spirit, we don't wanna see this happen, but it has happend, we don't know when they will get recovered.Artest is ok, he just need more time.

Healthy, time and chemistry, three words I am thinking of right now. But, if Yao and Tmac really can't get recovered completely or be strong enough to carry this team to success this season, then something must be changed.

People will say, hey, it's just the beginning of a season, why start talking these things? trade, rebuilding or something kind of this. Well I don't mean it, I hope Yao and Tmac can get the ring in Houston, really.

Be healthy, be strong, be a soldier on the court, every player of the rockets.

Appreciate what you say, maybe Shane's back help us too much, but we just need his defence, and his steady 3-point-shot,ave 10 pts is not much, but with Battier on the court,Tracy,Yao,Artest and even all other players on the court can get much cosy shooting, that is what we need, and co0operate defence can not reflect in data statistics,be patient time will tell the truth :)

Did Tmac really only score 3 points last night??

Jesus man... I'm fairly certain I could get more than that. How do you drop 30 one night and 3 the next???

Remember game 22?? Tmac was garbage in that game too although he made a couple big shots down the stretch... maybe his balls shrivel up inside him when he sees Kobe (a man).

He was a key player to our succerss last year. He led our defense, which won us basically all of the games. Our defense is what gave us our wins, and it is what made us so successful throughout the second half of the season last year, and for, in my opinion, the best defender in the league to be gone from an elite defending team really gives the Rocket a hit.

And he was such a hussle player that put so much effort into winning. He set an example to the other guys and set the standards high on how tough they need to be playing, and consistently. He pumped up the players with his hussle and effort, and with him back on the court he'll be able to shut down the faster players on the court. Roy, Fernandez, and even Kobe showed their quickness over Artest, and they won't be given that same freedom when Shane comes back and shuts them down.

He was also a great team player, and ket the offense fluid by off the ball motion, and quick ball movement. He wasn't a ball stopper, and he definitely helped the chemistry of the team on both sides of the court.

Excellent point. It's just wishful thinking on the part of a lot of posters here.

Battier was active and playing last year when the team crashed and burned.

he'll make it easier, he can knock down open shots, more rest for tmac and artest, alot more options open up with him back, but we still need a center : / after last night i really really reallllly wanted to see deke back, he's a presence in the middle, even at 63 for just 10 minutes or so

People are looking at Battier's stats and size and wondering how is he going to help? You should be looking at the stuff that doesn't show up in the boxscore, THAT is what Battier has always been about. He's always seen as just a defender, but he's more than that.

We all know he'll bring in a 3 point shot. We know he'll bring defense and hustle. That's a given. What aren't we discussing?

That he'll bring in a great basketball IQ, not just on the court, but on the bench as well. I pointed out in one of the Portland threads that Battier would have made sure the rockets knew to switch and that mix-up with Ron/Tmac would never have happened. That's what he brings. Right now you have 5 different mindsets on the floor. 5 Points of views, 5 directions. Battier brings them together by making sure everyone is on the same page. He also has a tendency to stop the momentum of other teams. When other teams are starting to surge, he looks to draw offensive fouls. Which is huge because not only are you stopping them on a posession, but they also gain a foul. He's also decisive. In situations were the defense doesn't have time to set, like a fastbreak), he sets his eyes on one guy immediately, so it makes it easier for the rest to follow and pick up a man since that's one less guy to worry about. When you have 5 guys thinking too long about who to pick up, you end up leaving someone open while you're busy thinking, with Battier on the floor, that's less likely. He also rebounds pretty well. He sets picks well, especially when it allows someone to get an easy score. Like when a running back breaks free and has only one man to beat to the end zone, then that one guy gets blocked by the wide receiver. Battier is that wide receiver.

So that means other teams get:

    -More 24 second violations
    - More fouls
    - less momentum swings
    - less easy baskets
    - more frustrated because of the previous 4 things, leading to bad plays

    The rockets get:
    - easier baskets
-more posessions than the opposing team

Opposing teams are affected more. This shows why Battier's addition doesn't excite some, because they're looking at what he brings to the Rockets, when the real advantage is what he brings to opposing teams.

i forgot to mention I don't mean battier's addition will automatically make us #1 championship contenders, i do agree we need some more size up front and for Alston to play better, but Battier is the difference between us being 4-3 right now or 6-1.

When did we crash and burn? The 22 game winning streak? Playing Utah in the playoffs with no Yao, a hurt Battier, no Alston for a few games/hurt the others, a hurt T-Mac? And still we manged to push them to 7 games.

+1 to both of your posts. The Lakers game was just horrible but the other two we win with Battier on the court. Allen doesn't get wide open looks over and over in that game and Roy doesn't get the ball that easily nor does he get the shot off that open.

Top 3 things we need most.

    1) Chemistry/time
    2) Shane Battier
    3) Deke

To the question asked in the topic:

I don't. The Rockets will still be on the cusp of getting into the playoffs.

Battier's Defense, Heart, and the courage to take Charges is infectious and will be emulated by other player's that see him take hard fouls for his team.

Scola, Hayes and Barry are the only 3 that I see take Charges.

We were getting abused by point guard driving into the lane thanks to Rafer.

Battier would most definietly take a few for the team.

I think Battier will make a huge huge difference. It's hysterically funny how most people can be so short sighted especially with 75 more games to go. If healthy the rockets are the only team capable of beating the Lakers in the West (what happened last night means nothing to me this early in the season). Yes I do agree they need to add more size on the frontline, but they basically got Ron Artest, Brent Barry and the sophmore Aaron Brooks added to this years rotation without losing anything from last years squad. They started this season with a gimpy T-Mac (who realistically didnt have a training camp), a recoving from season ending injury Yao Ming and one of the best two way players in the game trying to find himself on a new team Ron Artest. Yes it's probably time to hit the panick button. Geeez

Because Atest can save energy and dedicate himself to the offense which is desperatetly needed for this team.
