I'm pretty sure he meant reputation. I doubt anyone is saying you will be on an all defensive team just because you are a star, that is ridiculous. However, if you were once a great defensive player, you may be voted on based on that alone, irregardless of your current abilities. Guys like Kobe and Artest were once great defensive players, or at least seemed like they were, and now are recognized for their reputation.

Huh? Am I missing something here? When has Shaq ever had recognition? When did Lebron ever have name recognition prior to this year?

We're talking about defensive reputation/defensive name recognition. Did you somehow fail to miss that distinction? Were you in some how, some way, seriously under the illusion that I was talking about overall name recognition? Seriously?

Gosh, I have to stop posting in the GARM because the lack of logical competency sometimes makes my head spin.

What's going to be really interesting is to see Ariza guard Kobe.

no self-respecting NBA fan would not know about the Pippen incident.

Battier will guard him. Ariza can guard Artest.

For 5 years, LBJ's reputation was that he was an indifferent defender.

in his 6th year, his defense improved immensely and consistently. and he was name to the all-defensive team, so much for his reputation in his first year.

so much for your baseless claim that the all-defensive team is based on reputation.

I know about the incident. It has nothing to do with Ariza. Are you suggesting that since Ariza is good defensive wing who won a ring like Pippen, that he's automaticall going to sulk? That's ridiculous. What kind of nutty fan are you.

Pippen was the #2 man on 6 Championship teams, Ariza rode on the coattails of Kobe/Gasol/Phil to win one.

i've been a fan of Ariza since his days at Westchester High. he sulks from time to time. just ask Larry Brown, his coach w the NYK

He's better than both on defense. FYI, just because a guy is the best at offense doesn't mean he is the best on defense.

cabbage, this is why it's so hard to stay in the GARM for very long. But I did enjoy reading the last 2 pages of this thread. I think if he doesn't get it by now, there's no chance. He's been caught making up things (watched plenty of Stockton...in his old age...and somehow knowing of his defensive prowess), hasn't responded to the parts of arguments he's lost, and has continually made ridiculous claims in general.

oh right, and props to the thread starter. I think a lot of us have said it all year, but I'm glad it's a full-on discussion on the differential between Artest's perceived and actual defensive ability

    back-pedaling already ?

you set out to defend your position based on your own knowledge. once i have exposed the holes in your baseless claims, you're now pointing the finger at John Hollinger.

way to build your creditbility.

You are kind of nuts. Did you take your meds today? Hollinger ranks Battier ahead of Kobe and Wade. I respect his opinion more than a doo's.
