Then don't make stupid comments like he's a goof. People would say Scola's shooting looks goofy too... but if they go in all the sudden who cares how many dipsy dos and off balance spin moves he makes to get there. I'll tell you what, you find me a good defender and high IQ player that went undrafted and has ONE skill that's NBA ready right now... then trade Chuck. Adelman wanted to get him out of there too when he was signed on as the coach of the Rockets. But for some reason, he stuck. How about you give credit to the scouting staff who found him? And Chuck for working hard to do what he had to do to get on the court. I just don't understand this fascination with belittling the things he does right to complain about the things he doesn't. I didn't understand it with Rafer, I don't understand it with Yao, I don't understand it with AB. Every player on our team knows their strengths and weaknesses... with the exception of Ron... and plays to them.
Where did he say or write that? Because I've heard that he does work hard on both free throws and those flip shots and layups around the basket. Bullard talked about that all the time, and he probably spends more time around the players than Justice.
That's hilarious "throws it up like a grenade" Interesting posts though, such as "why don't other players have better d?" I would like Hayes to improve his shooting, though it's not like he can't shoot at all, he'll make some of the open shots. he should be making at least 90% of those easy, open shots though. I liked what he was doing on the high post in yesterday's game.
If he'd stop practicing his half court shots & work on some short mid range jumpers . . . he'd be a better asset. I LOVE Chuck for his DEF, but daggum it couldn't hurt to have a SHORT range game too!? BUT, how about that Lakers/Mavs games at the end of the season where he made some wicked moves in the paint. One of them up against Kobe. Granted they amounted to NOTHING, but it was cool seeing him be aggressive.
I beg to differ with the OP. I mean, come on. And I'll start with: "Hayes plays to win, not to score." When we have a roster of Yao, McGrady, Artest, Scola, Brooks, Wafer - even Barry and Cook - guys who prioritize putting points on the boxscore, shouldn't we have guys who will balance out the team? And so, we have (okay, Ron-Ron belongs), we have Deke, we have Lowry, we have Battier, we have Hayes. Yes, Hayes is freakin' undersized, plays small for his position, has an awful-looking shot, poor FT% - in short, not much gifted in tlight of his offense. But dude's doing his mad job on the D, on the boards, hustle, BB IQ, and all the little things outside the stats, and he can still contribute on offense in other ways, sets solid picks, converts easy layups (because he gets open once in a while) - contributing to a high FG%, and has decent +/- stats. And he doesn't back down from a challenge, hell, not even in the face somebody way more talented than him. So aren't those enough? So we should make him a scoring option then, if that's the case? Big no-no. He's aware of his weakness that's why he leaves the scoring to the other guys who have better chances to score. With all that said, he's a defensive specialist - probably he threw his O game, or probably not yet - but what freakin' matters is he just plays 110% on the court, and if that's defense, then so be it. Defense is his forte, his game, his style of ball. This is what he does best. This is why he gets more minutes than Landry (no offense to CL), and that's why he's on our roster for "so long" (according to the OP). He knows his role to the team, and will keep working on it. If he can find his own touch, that would be a good addition to his game. He can be in the making of a Charles Barkley, I think. But right now, tenacious D is what the team needs and expects from him to deliver, and shouldn't be exchanged for some bleak chance of forcing him to sport shooting skills on-the-fly. It's like making Brooks to become a true, passing PG - on the dot. This is playoff time, and we're in contention, so we gotta be scrappy, and focus on utilizing what we have instead of griping for what we don't have. Developing an offensive game, more often than not, requires a different kind of consistency (in this case, fix his shooting form), which he can't evolve to because he barely touches the ball (except for offensive boards) on the offensive end, = less shot attempts. And even if he did, he'd just shoot them horribly, and it would give him a drastic result of getting scolded and hitting the bench. Imagine that. But, perhaps sooner or later though, he could learn some more decent post moves or a jumper within 12 feet, in any way, he'll just have to let it come to him. Who knows? He could get there someday. Just a healthy argument from me.
Why should he? Every player on the rockets play to their strength. If we are using Chuck Hayes as one of our offensive weapons, I'll be worry. Plus, his role for the Rockets is to play defense and grab boards.
If you listen to the interview in the 610 Brooks Podcast thread, Aaron mentions that Hayes' weird hitch in his FTs is more due to nerves, because Hayes shoots them fine during practice. I've also read before how during Rockets practice, Chuck takes part and wins three-point contests and so on, which proves the guy can shoot - just not consistently in games. Seeing as how the Rockets don't play him much during the regular season, maybe Hayes should be sent down to the D-league for a couple of months or more to just work on offensive moves and gametime free throws. I think it could really help him gain more confidence about his shot.
Have you seen how ugly Glen Davis' jumpshot is? Multiply that by a million and there's chuck hayes' shot.
Let me guess who said it... one of the football guys. John "what's this sport that uses a round ball?" Grenato or Lance "I am Longhorn" Zierlein There's a reason I only listen to them when Clutch is on... My bet is they have no idea what the frak goes on in practice, if they were covering a practice the media is only allowed in at the very end. I find it impossible to believe that a professional team would allow one of their players to NOT practice an aspect of the game. Just stupid.
where do u think he came from? the Dleague. He's already been playing in the dleague for quite some time before being called up by the Rockets. Funny how he had 12 points and 12 rebounds in his first NBA match under his first 10day contract and now he gets about 12 points a month........ and anyways if u havent noticed only first and second year players in the nba can be sent down to the dleague...lol do u see any nba veterans being sent down to the dleague? lol that'd be so weird like dikembe mutombo being sent down to the dleague...........
Imagine if Chuck Hayes is an Offensive Juggernaut in the league avg 25 points a game and 10 boards. He would be consider top 10 in the league lol.
Battier said after last game if Chuck was just 3 inches taller, he'd be a force in this league and be making All-Defensive teams. Actually, I remember Tracy McGrady saying something similar a couple years ago after a win in Chicago.
