There are Muslim communities in New York, globally reported terrorism occured in New York, and no one, be they local imam or not, stopped it. As such, it meets the criteria from his original post:
I just thought that was a pretty easy softball you threw up, I am not arguing here that every Muslim community is rife with terrorists.

 How would a local imam in New York stop the foreign hijackers?

The point of his post was that any act of terrorism in said location is the result of the present Muslim community in that location. That NYC has Muslim communities has no pertinence to this argument.

I hold the Pope responsible for all Catholics who condone and undergone abortions.

What percentage of imams support the jihad? Probably a small one. What percentage of Catholic priests support abortion? None I would hazard to guess. If they did they would be ex-Priests I imagine.

It's an offensive analogy and I'm not even Catholic...

to be an imam you just need enough money to build a mosque. or you need people who like you who have built a mosque.

an imam isn't some official position which you get after passing a test. thats the difference with islam. it doesn't have a clergy. which makes it amazingly tolerant of a variety of viewpoints. however it does mean it can't be 'regulated' as many folks would like.

personally i think religions shouldn't be regulated. if said imams are supporting terrorism and in doing so break laws...nail them. however to try to project western notions of 'the church' onto muslims is ridiculous and obviously ignorant.

    Denial Denial Denial.

Google the Pew Research Study done after 9/11. Why don't you accept the possibility that there may be truth to what I say instead of getting defensive and just calling me a moron because what I write is so unsettling it would crumble the false world you've built to keep your mind safe.

I'm not anti-Muslim. I just think when you have a country like Jordan, where a poll showed that 100% of the population has a negative view of Jews - 100%!, you have some serious issues in that part of the world.

These people view us as the evil enemy, and think that terrorist attacks against civilians are more like blowing up aliens from outer space. You just don't get that. I really suggest you open your mind to the idea of how strong the hate is...and it's just not a few extremist - there is a pervasive hate for the west that's been fostered by decades of propaganda and misinformation and general suffering. And if that's not addressed, we're going to have a clash of civilizations. Extermism isn't the problem, it's merely a symptom.

How do i know, because I use to know TONS of Egyptians, and after a while - not from NYC, but from Egypt. And one thing that i began to learn, that really turned my stomach upside down...in that drunken conversation where more then one has admitted, "Yeah, I was happy when the towers fell, then i felt a little guilty. But yeah, i have to admit i felt happy". Sure, on the surface they say something else, but inside, the hate is there. Hate that feeds sympathy and quiet support for groups like Al Qaeda.

I love psychics, I wish I had the power to tell exactly what other people think but don't say. It would be great to have the ability to read minds.

If 100% of Egypt, and 100% of Jordan decided that OBL was the second coming of Moses it wouldn't mean that a majority of Muslims supported and cheered terrorism.

Furthermore the fact the people you talked to admitted they felt guilty afterwards means they have the thought process to think about what they were cheering for and realize it was wrong.

After 9/11 how many people in the U.S. were scared to fly on the same plane with any middle eastern muslim? That doesn't mean Americans hate all middle eastern muslims even though polls showed an large amount of people were nervous about it.

Because you talked to some Egyptians doesn't mean you know what a majority of Muslims believe. Even if you talked to every single Egyptian it doesn't mean you know what a majority of Egyptians believe.

you win New Yorker. i guess if a study shows 100% of Jordanians hating on the Jews it must be true..

.isn't seeing some group of people in a negative view different than hating?? just a question.

"blowing up Aliens from out of space???" .......... you've seen a few too many movies.

I can poll two christians who say that all Muslims need to be killed. But I would be an idiot to claim that due to those stats all Christians hold this view.

100%? That's interesting because I've heard there still is a small Jewish population living in Jordan. Also since the peace treaty there has been increased trade and tourism between Jordan and Israel so I highly doubt the Jordanians getting rich from Israel hate Jews.

Even if it is a 100% of Jordanians hate Jews keep in mind there is a Christian population of Jordan so a 100% of them must hate Jews too so then Christians must hate Jews too since a 100% of Christians in Jordan hate jews.

i fail to see why muslim opinion in muslim countries has that much direct impact on me as long as the US does its job protecting the country from terrorism.

that being said lets look at some stats from the Pew.

in december 2001 in the US
"Favorable views of Muslim-Americans have risen from 45% in March to 59% today"
so apparently most americans had a more favorable view of muslims in the US after september 11th. this obviously can be attributed to the fact that they probably bothered to learn more about them. maybe you should try it too?

as far as negative viewpoints of the US lets look given that most european countries had unfavorable viewpoints of the US according to PEW as well.

    this is march of 2003
    [IMG]
yes turkey is lower. obviously given they staunchly opposed the US in iraq. but spain is right there. and even england has a 48% unfavorable view of the US. according to PEW that is.

interestingly its more that the muslim world is afraid of the US. perhaps that would have a huge impact on if the muslim world 'supports terrorism' given that terrorism would be viewed as an opposition to american military hegemony. perhaps the cure for that would be to stop american military hegemony.

yet many of these people support and want democracy. how 'evil' of them.

at the same time there is a lot of 'confidence' in bin laden. however i genuinely do believe this is more given bin laden's vocal opposition to the US than support for bin laden himself. as was seen in support for saddam given that he eventually seemed to be the only person in the mid east standing up to the US during the gulf war. also this is june 2003. height of US invasion of iraq.

even in the US in july of 2003 after anti muslim opinion rose...it still wasn't a majority...simply a small plurality.

i think any poll that shows 100% of people believing X has to be false. it reminds me of how 99% of folks vote for mubarak in egypt. do you really believe it?

that being said any poll in jordan that says 'jews' equates to israel. no crap they have a negative view of israel. do you think if there was a poll taken in israel that said 'do you have a positive or negative view of syria' would it be 50/50? c'mon now. stop making the word 'jew' seem religious when in this case it absolutely is political.

decades of propaganda? you do realize that after WWII the US opinion in the mid east was extremely high right? there is a story that the sauds (ibn saud i believe) was invited to meet up with churchill. churchill got him on some military boat or such and smoked in his face. ibn saud hated him. whereas when the US folks come they chilled and loved em. hence the saudis had ARAMCO. also israel was seen to be the byproduct of the british not the US. the US freaking supported pakistan when it was butchering bangladeshis and veto'ed UN resolutions against pakistan. so again what are you smoking? historically the US hasn't been hated.

the irony is apparent. your freaking basis for thinking muslims support al qaeda is a drunk man. given that alcohol is expressly prohibited in islamic scriptures the validity. so you are attributing ill will towards a religious group given the viewpoints of the least religious members of that group. brilliant.

ps: certainly there is a negative image of the US in many parts of the US. and frankly i'd submit rightfully so. obviously terrorism isn't the proper channel of this negative image however to ignore the reasons is ridiculous. however all this could be significantly cleared up by simple actions. donate 500 mil to rebuild/help kashmir right now and all those terrorist camps that are operating there would be gone. instead we'd rather pump 300 bil in iraq and get more hate.

I think the problem most of these people have here with you, New Yorker, is that you make very bold statements without providing much, if any evidence at all, backing up up your claims. Provide some links from credible sites. Saying you heard it from a drunk or a friend of a friend and such does not add any credibility to your claims. It only makes you look ignorant and a blind hater.

I find it interesting that your "research" shows that all Jordanians hate Jews so you conclude that Jordanians are racist and full of hatred yet at the same time your "research" shows that Westerners think lowly of Muslims and so you naturally conclude that Muslims are evil. Huh?

Using his twisted logic, either the Jews are really pretty evil if 100% of Jordanians oppose them or the Muslims are just as innocuous as the Westerners that allegedly hate them. It doesn't go both ways.

I provided the Pew research results - but that doesn't seem to mean much.
