For the same reason we all ran to the bike racks after school.

Casual fans need to get past the heavyweights, excitement is few and far between, once you really start following the sport you realize that for the most part, the lower weight classes from Middleweight on down is where the action is and the best fights and fighters tend to be. I'll take Morales/Barrerra/Pacquiao over the Klitchskos any day of the week.

Spoken like somebody who's watched about 30 seconds worth of boxing in their entire life and has made no effort to do anything other than be revolted by it....

I started getting into it when Marvin Hagler was in his prime. That is until Sugar Ray cam along and punked him.

I watched Ali fight in the 70's, but was pretty young (10ish).

Then came along Tyson and got me back into it. Since Tyson faded, I haven't been into the heavy weights as much.

Boxing got old for me when Prince Naseem stopped flying in on his carpet into the ring.

Actually I think there is some truth to this statement. When I was in high school (which was many many years ago), nothing got the students more excited than 2 kids getting into a fight. There is something about humans WANTING to see 2 other humans beat the crap out of each other. It is like some natural instinct even though humans, I guess, aren't supposed to have instincts. It is like this "instinct" reminds us that even though we are the most intelligent of all animals, we are still animals.

As for me, I am not that big into boxing. Every once and awhile if a truly big fight is coming on, I'll try to watch it but I am not one of those guys who has to watch every Friday Night Fights, lol.

I actually enjoy going back and reading about the old fighters, especially those in the middleweight and welterweight class like Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, and many others.

    One reason not mentioned:

Like baseball, has a great history...and there's a lot of cross-generation comparisons. This guy would have beat this guy...stuff like that. Makes for great discussion.

It got good for me when Marco Antonio Barrera showed him what a real fighter did in the ring.

The greatest fight I ever saw was Nigel Benn vs. Gerald Mcllellan in London, about 10 years ago. It was like a Rocky movie, back and forth with lots of drama. The champion Benn was literally knocked out of the ring and onto the announcer's desk about 1 minute into the fight. He got back in and both men took a beating. The fight ended with Mcllelan in a coma due to a blood clot which left him blind and crippled. Despite the tragic ending, this was the greatest and most thrilling fight ive ever seen. It was broadcast on Showtime in the U.S and I recommend ya'll try to find a copy on tape if possible.

Magical fights like this one are why we watch boxing.

That was a great fight to watch, but I can not bear to even think about it because of what happened to McClellan. His sisters care for him 24/7/365, it's so sad. A furious prizefighter has been reduced to a weak man, the sad irony.

Not to say that he deserved it, because nobody does, but McClellan was a VERY bad guy, emotionally very disturbed to hte extent of being a psycho/sociopath. He was really into dogfighting and supposedly would watch videos of animals getting mauled and killed to get himself hyped up for fights, and would torture animals with his dogs, and other stuff like that.

Again, not that he deserved it, but he is not a sympathetic character.

I've heard these stories too. Still, nobody deserves the fate he's been given. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
