think technically, this is s malapropism, though not a very amusing one.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malapropism

Shakespeare used malapropisms to add humor to several lower class characters, so it's really been going on since English wasn't recognisable as English.

Why do people say “axe” instead of “ask”?

I disagree, language is ever evolving much like ask vs aks and the way people ridicule people who use the latter is what I equate grammar Nazis to. The key point in language is to communicate and as long as there is understanding in the message then it worked. Standard formal communication is to ensure that messages have the least chance in error, but when you're on a message board on the internet who cares? Those who care most are those who think it gives them an intellectual advantage over those who don't. But that's just my opinion.

Your point makes sense if you are referring to people shortening words or not using punctuation (ex. shouldve, dont, ttyl).
But i don't think the people who are using this incorrectly know the diff.
Do you want to see such grammar on a memo your company sent out because Mr. millennial didn't know the difference?

I should of quit using them...I probably even could of quit using them, I thought many times I would of.... but I never did.

Seriously...it's what happens when people write like they talk. It 'sounds' like 'should of' so that's what they write.
