Why do people continue to say Parsons can create his own shot?

Numbers don't lie, but they don't tell everything either.
Parsons is 4 years younger and only getting better.
You pretty much know what you're gonna get from Ariza who is naturally declining.
Again, I hope I'm wrong and Parsons ends up being no better than say Toni Kukoc.
If he ends up looking more like Scottie Pippen though, ouch.

He would pump fake successfully when the defender is late closing out.

He couldn't create his own shot like Larry Bird used to by doing a series of pump fakes and jab steps to create space to hit a jumper.

Here's some Synergy stats for Parsons and Ariza with the breakdown of where his shots come from and their success.

    For Parsons:

Pick and Roll Ball Handler 16.1% of shots for 0.79 points per possession (ppp)

Spotup 29.8% of shots 1.07 ppp

Transition 22.7% of shots 1.19 ppp

ISO 6.5% of shots for 0.62 ppp

Pick and Roll Man 0.4% of shots for 1.2 ppp

So, basically over 50% of his shots come from Transition and Spotup and he's very good at both.

He is very inefficient at ISO and pick and roll ball handling.

Overall Parson's ppp per shot is 1.0 which is good.

    For Ariza:

Spot up 32.2% of shots for ppp of 1.09

Transition 24.6% of shots for ppp of 1.3. That's an elite ppp comparable to Lebron's 1.33 in Transition.

ISO 4.8% of shots for ppp of 0.81

Pick and Roll Handler on 9.2% of shots for 0.6 ppp

So, Ariza also gets over 50% of his shots from spotup and transition and he's very good at both (slightly better than Parsons).

Ariza is bad at being a pick and roll ball handler.

Ariza's ISO are at an average level and better than Parson's.

Neither guy gets many shots as the screener/roll man in pick and roll. 2.8% of Ariza's shots and 0.4% of Parsons.

Overall Ariza's ppp is 1.04 which is good.

So Ariza is virtually the same if not slightly better in most categories. And he's also better on defense.

I'm very interested to see him on this team.

    Scottie pippen?

    Lmao.

Parsons is a 4 year college player who is 25 that has started a majority of his time in the nba.

    Dude isnt getting much better.

I'm so glad you started posting more often. Great comparison between the two! I've been trying to forget Ariza's first stint with Houston. I know he's a plus defender. Nice to see that he's very good spotting up for a shot and in transition. My main concern is if he can continue his excellent shooting from behind the arc from last year. He improved each of his last 3 seasons, hitting 40% in 2013/14. If he can come close to that this coming season, I'll be a happy camper.

    and costing us half.

people who are using arizas first stint with us as some sort of indication of how he will perform are missing the point, he'll be a 3-5th option and be able to take the shots that come to him.

speaking of missing the point, we need something more at PG. I'm OK with Beverley but we need more depth. not sold on Canaan and Beverley just plays 110% 24/7.

Can we get brooks on the cheap pls moray

Ariza is older though, and has possible contract year performance issues. I rather have Parsons on the team, but definitely not at nearly 2x the price.

Pippen also played 4 years in college, didn't become a starter until the playoffs his rookie season, wasn't an all-star until his 3rd year.

I love Synergy's stats! Thanks! Wish they were more accessible.

Interesting that the rockets hardly ever used parsons as the pick man.

The frequency of his iso/picknroll handler & spot up numbers correspond to playing with two offensive stars in Howard and harden.

In regards to the topic however, I'd also be curious what the % of shots were assisted and unassisted.

Come on now. I know Pippen is persona non grata around these parts but he was clearly a better player than Parsons. He was more athletic, quicker an elite defender and could take most players off the dribble. He was an all star in something like his second or third year as a starter. His career took a nasty turn after he left the Bulls and his personal issues are obvious, but as a player his potential was obvious even from his rookie year.

Parsons is a nice player and I'd estimate he has room to grow. But a future Pippen he is not.

So is he or isn't he on a hall of game pace?

aelliott thank you for posting the Synergy stats for both players.

BOOM here are some more evidence big timer. The Ariza signing for half the price of Parsons is looking better by the minute.

I use to cringe when he would try to create and be Michael Jordan. Wasn't as bad as casspi though.

Parson can do some playmaking at regular season, he can't do it at playoff.
