i feel the same exact way. Atheists can be just as obnoxious, but claims like "It is backed scientifically" implicitly stating that it was there all along and the scientific comunity is just catching up is disingenuous. Religion has been a very powerful spiritual guide for centuries, but it has also been a means of people to misinform and mislead the masses.
Not at all. When the Bible says "circular" the world can still be FLAT. If the world is spherical it cannot be flat. Pretty big difference.
How much clearer do you want? Genesis goes hand in hand with science. Its only the radical christians who claim the earth is ony 6,000-10,000 years old. Bible genealogy does provide evidence that MAN has been on earth for only thousands of years. But that does not have to mean that the "heavens and earth" have only been around that long as many "Christian" Fundamentalists and Young Earth Creationists will want one to believe. Gen. 1:2 and on describes God's terraforming of the earth over a period of what the account calls as "days". However, these "days" were most likely not literal days, but rather figurative "days" such as the descriptive sayings: "Back in the 'day' of my youth" or "In the 'day' of the dinosaurs". The creative "days" mentioned in Genesis could not have been literal 24 hour days because, in just one example in Gen.1:11-13, grass is described as shooting forth and vegetation bearing seed and fruit trees yielding fruit in just one of these "days". So because these creative "days" were figurative, they could have actually been hundreds, thousands or even millions of years in length.
We all know that most "religious" people will recite anything told to them by their "leader". However, is anyone else noticing the chilling trend that, as we become a society who worships science, people will absorb and recite as gospel anything that comes after "scientists believe..."? I guess to be human is to be gullible one way or the other.
Circular = flat earth Sphere - not flat earth and do you want to ignore centuries of humans believing the Earth was flat based on Biblical references...
Regardless of that, the claim that it is scientifically backed is just ludicrous. Countless examples and Galileo specifically will tell you that the bible was not scientifically correct and when opposed charged individuals with heresy to conform to their views.
LOL. Well if that the case then the minute anyone dug underground, or encountered a valley or anything, then it still makes you terribly anal lol
Very well said. Religion has been used as a tool to misguide humans and derail entire civilizations. I would never deny this. However, personal belief is hard to defend when there is so much rightful wrath towards "religion" today. Science and personal belief in meaningful life are not mutually exclusive to me. Secular regimes are just as dangerous as religious ones, in the sense that they leverage propaganda and scarcity of information to control thought. That's an evil that I would gladly fight against. This whole "genesis vs science" thing is just not a useful conversation for people to have. At some point you'll have to rely on intuition and not the glorified opinions of someone else.
Lol I'm not debating that, I'm telling the guy how anal he is over two words that in this context are the same thing. Not debating anything else
stating that the Earth is "circular" is not saying the world is a sphere. It is not anal. Circular Earth means flat earth. Hence why the quote from the Bible he posted had the word "spherical" in parentheses in order to alter the meaning to make it match with modern science. I've seen it done in the Quran plenty of times also.
Yup. I actually do believe in god, but there is a fine line I choose to separate all this. Faith is a powerful tool in coping with adversity and troubles, its almost like 2nd nature. I also agree that the scientific community has arrogance implying if you don't agree with what they are saying its because you aren't smart enough to understand it. I have actually had a research job as an undergrad for a number of years. While its great I got to see how many nonsensical ridiculous proposals time was dedicated to just to get grants. Every time I come home my mom or my sister will cite some article relating some bad habit of mine with some correlation and I tell them they shouldn't put too much weight into this stuff until substantial proof has been given. All too often you hear "Research has shown.." and immediately people picture the dude with the white lab coat telling them this as if it was fact.
It's different, scientists have no problem admitting their own shortcomings and correct their theories based on newly discovered facts and evidences --- Dont make SCIENCE sound like a religion, not even close. You do not need to believe in science, nor does it require you to believe, it is not a belief system.
I respect other people's beliefs up until they do not respect mine. Which means I don't openly go out of my way and bash religious people like I did before. But if someone religious fanatic starts coming in here trying to condemn everyone that does not believe in his faith with his holier-than-thou attitude then I'm letting him have a piece of my mind.
The bible is structured to a way where you can claim something in the bible that said "oh, its a shape of some sort" can automatically translate to "SEE, SEE THE BIBLE SAID IT WAS A SHAPE. AND IT WAS!"
Thanks, thats what I thought too --- the burden of proof should be on whoever made the claim, not the ones that reject it because of insufficient evidences. [quote One of my pet peeves is that louder atheists tend to think they're bringers of peace. Fear of institutionalized religion is something I have a deep appreciation for. However, but as long as people seek to stamp out the "opposing view"... guess what, we won't have much peace and civility.[/quote] I dont know where you get that bringers of peace from, that seems to be far fetched... What I do know, is that with all the good teachings in the Bible or any religious book, mankind has never stopped killing each other. Or just remain in the default position? This is not a do or die situation, you do not have to choose your side --- just be honest to yourself --- do you know or not? If you do, prove it us to spread the word, if you dont, wait until further evidences. Btw my blue dragon says hi.
