Why do Houston and Dallas hate each other so much?

    I've always wondered this myself.
I don't think there are really any other good 2 city comparisons to look at.
Maybe Boston-NYC, but that has the different state element going.
LA-San Fran could work, but they are such different cities that I think one can attribute liking one over the other to preference.

Houston and Dallas are very very similar. And perhaps its that similarity that leads to the "hate". Each wants to be the best, and neither can point to a definitive set of facts that make it "obvious" they are that top dog.

Culturally, I didn't care for either, so moved to Austin.

Dallas is the high maintenance girlfriend, Houston, the hard working boyfriend is always looking for reasons to dump.

    I've lived in both places.

    Houston advantages:
--Nicer people (seriously this is obvious if you spend time in both places)
    --Better restaurants
    --Better winters (5-10 degrees warmer)
--Access to Gulf of Mexico / Galveston

    Dallas advantages:
--A more asthetically pleasing city in parts
    --Better high end shopping
    --Less humidity in summer
    --Easy to get to lakes

    I've lived in both.

Dallas is the Southernmost outpost of the Midwest. It's not a true Texan city in anything but name. People tend to be superficial, rude and pretentious. Although Dallas folk tend to think that their city is very international, it's anything but, since the people tend to be very close-minded (Republican stronghold) and fearful towards outsiders and strange cultures. It also seems to be much more racially divided than other Texas cities.

Houston is the Westernmost city in what is known as the Deep South. It's a true American Southern city and a true Texan city. You get hot, sticky summers, good manners and friendly people. It's also very cosmopolitan with a very diverse range of races and cultures. It's politics vary as much as it's people do.

There's really not a true comparison here. Houston is a huge city. Dallas is not; it's the combined Dallas-Arlington-FtWorth populations that put it on the map. And Ft. Worth is an entirely different city (which i love)- it's the Gateway to the West.

(Full disclosure- I did meet some very nice people in Dallas. Just not every day.)

My old boss was born and raised in Oak Cliff. He moved to Houston around 1990.
He's a cool guy but there were times he went overboard on the "Dallas is a better city ..." crap until one day I asked him " So when are you moving back?".
He didn't answer, but I think the answer is never since he still lives in Houston.

The differences I've noted is houston is more diverse and more humid, but majority unsafe with pockets of nice areas, whereas north Dallas is safe and south Dallas isn't and Dallas has a better transit system but worse traffic.

everybody always says Houston is more diverse, but do the actual demographic numbers prove that? Especially considering the entire metro area of DFW and the entire Houston metro? My guess is that it's pretty close regarding diversity.

We aren't talking about DFW. We're talking about Dallas.

ok fine -- 2010 census numbers

Dallas (city): 29% white, 25% black, 42% hispanic, 3% asian
Houston (city): 26% white, 24% black, 44% hispanic, 6% asian

    that's not that different

    Pennsylvania (Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh)
    Ohio (Cleveland vs. Cincinnati)
Florida (Tampa Bay vs. Miami vs. Orlando)

Those that I listed are some other state rivalries with pro sports teams.
